well anytime someone drops gun my first reaction is not to stand there and take a chance that the saftey will work, it is to seek a hiding place. I dont care what kind of saftey it has because they are not 100% nothing is there is always a chance it will fail. (which is why we treat every gun as if it is loaded)

When I was about 16....I was deer hunting and I had my rifle a 1903-a3 uncocked/on saftey on but with one in the chammber. I had it slung across my back as I was walking across a dry stream bed. I slipped and fell landing on my back. It fired beside my head when it hit. I didn't even know it had fired until I got back to the truck (I hit my head on a rock when I fell) and unloaded it to find the spent brass. So I'm a little jumpy around loaded guns which happen to be falling to the ground onto a hard surface (call me crazy).

The absolute worst thing to do with a dropped gun is to attempt to catch it. That is practically begging for a dirt nap. Let it fall. It will be alright. Most guns pass drop test and modern firearms inherit designs proclude them from discharging when dropped.

the holster really wasn't the problem. it was just bad luck mostly I mean what are the odds? but if I had used a retention holster I prob. would not have snapped it given the hurry I was in (I didnt even pull my shirt down which would have prevented the whole thing in the first place)...The gun doesn't just fall out of the holster i'm using you have to pull it out (kind of snaps in). but it got pulled out by my shirt/mother
