Has anyone actually been caught in a "DMZ"?

I don't really think it's been about one idiot in particular, so much as idiots and stupidity in general.

Sure, we seem to have a pair of prime example in a couple of 'em, but it's not - despite their belief to the contrary - really about them.

I read Mike's story a while back and thought the charges were awful tough and the whole deal could have been handled better by campus police, considering he had a handgun carry permit, no dope, no drugs, nothing else. The smartest thing would have been for the campus police to just ask him to take his handgun back to his trunk, unload it, and leave, with him making an honest mistake. Raking an honest guy with a clean record over the coals with felony weapons charges does not serve the public any good. A young man shouldn't have to go through that kind of hell and the campus police should have a lot more common sense in serving the community.

Now as far as seeing some sort of sign that doesn't want 'concealed weapons' and taking off the jacket and unconcealing your handgun, that is just asking to be seen. There are a lot of technicalities in life. The smartest thing to do is to keep that jacket on and not let your gun be seen. No one would know better, but to show out in public like a 'big man' and show off your 'piece' is not too bright because of some sign that says 'no concealed weapons'. Then the property owner's security asks to see a permit and refuse to show. Yes, technically you don't have to show it by law. But the security doesn't know who you are, you just took off your jacket (which exposed your weapon, thus causing attention) and now the security guy doesn't know if you are legit. Of course he'll call the cops. The cops probably thought that was funny for that little show out in Nashville. I think it is stupid. Keep your gun concealed and you won't have those problems. Don't ask don't tell.

Razorback, I'm not picking on Mike at all... and I think even he will tell you now, that "Frat house + Party" should have flipped the switch that says "No gun", even if it were perfectly legal to have one there.

But again, maybe that's just me. Besides, I haven't heard or read the whole story, so... :)

Anyway, I do agree that there should have been far less punishment involved, in his case.

Got me thinking... Yeah just OCing when there is a non legal sign that says No Concealed weapons seems weird for someone so worried about the law they won't show their HCP to a guard.

You mean like they might have been trying to provoke a confrontation or something? :)
