Ok, I pulled the trigger on a M91-38 Carcano. The dealer wouldn't take a scanned copy of my C&R so I put it in the mail today. I'll let you know when it arrives and take more pictures. The picture posted is the rifle I bought.

Luckily I have some 6.5x52 I picked up from a friend about 5 years ago.

Both of them look to be in great shape. I looked at a Model 91 TS Troop Carbine at a gunshow at Cookeville a few years ago and the old guy who had it wanted $450. It looked like it had been through 20 wars. The stock was full of dents and gouges too. I thought about seeing if he would take less, but I knew I'd make him mad when I made him an offer.

I want one so bad for some reason. It would be a neat compact, lightweight rifle. Waht dealer did you end up getting this one from?

Am I the only one old enough to remember when these things were $29 and nobody wanted one?

I never see any for sale on any companies websites. Only the online auctions. I saw one at a pawn shop a year ago. It was a 91-38 I think for $265. They're good rifles. A lot of people think different than that. Theres a guy on www.surplusrifle.com forum that is a Carcano genius.

The 6.5 jap is available but high that is why I reload most of my stuff 6.5 jap, 303 brit, 8mm mauser, 30-06, 30 m1 carbine, 45-70, 43 mauser, plus the usual pistol stuff still like the 6.5 carcano 7.62x39, the 7.62x54R nagant, 6.5x55 mauser and the 223 dies

Neat little rifle. I wonder what modern/easy-to-find caliber it would be both cheap and practical to re-chamber/re-barrel it for... 6.5 x 55 Swedish comes to mind, but I don't know enough about the gun or caliber ( Carcano ) off the top of my head to say.

Edit: After looking it up, it looks like a simple chamber reaming would be all it would take to move up to 6.5 x 55, provided the magazine could handle the OAL of the round.

I've shot Motasyco's, same model that (maybe) killed JFK.

I think he's bought another one, too.

Maybe he'll check in.

Jamie Privi Partizan Makes it and it can be found for $15-19 6.5x55 is about the same and the bore on a carcano is .268 not the standard .264

... the bore on a carcano is .268 not the standard .264

That's odd... My reloading manual* lists both as using a .264 diameter bullet. :)

* It's old... Hodgdon Data Manual #26. The Speer book didn't have the Carcano listed at all.

They will because the .268 is uncommon as far as bullet selection goes and .264 will work just not as accurate

Doesn't sound like the gun would be a very good "project gun" then, and would get expensive fast if a person wanted to change calibers.

Yeah the Italians had to be wierd for some reason. They used a .268 in their 6.5x52 and their 7.35 is a .30 cal., but it don't use a .308 standard bullet. It uses a bullet of about .300. From what I hear it can vary a little from .298-.300. I still wouldn't mind having a good Carcano though.
