URGENT: New Jersey: Senate Committee Set to Vote on Flawed "Handgun Purchaser ID Card" Legislation‏

This afternoon at 2:00 p.m. today, Monday December 6th, the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee is scheduled to hear S2190, sponsored by State Senator Fred Madden (D-4), which directs the State Police to establish a “handgun purchaser identification card” which would permit the sale, transfer and delivery of handguns between cardholders and retail dealers only.

This legislation is apparently Senator Madden’s effort to pander to gun owners after his late-night tie-breaking vote flip that resulted in passage of Jon Corzine’s handgun rationing law in 2009. Unfortunately, the legislation does not go far enough and rubs salt in the wound by failing to exempt those who obtain the card from the one gun a month law. Senator Madden has squandered an opportunity to rectify his past actions and is seeking only a partial solution to New Jersey’s antiquated and unconstitutional gun laws.

S2190 does not eliminate the current paper form of “permit to purchase” but creates a bifurcated system run by the State Police in which paper permits must still be issued for some transactions, including private transfers, which cannot be made with the new card. The legislation has other troubling aspects, including use of an undefined, subjective standard to qualify for the new card (applicants must somehow prove themselves to be persons “of good character and good repute in the community in which they live,” a vague standard found elsewhere in NJ gun law that is in need of reform).

Senator Madden is insistent on pushing this bill with little opportunity for consultation and discussion with the National Rifle Association and the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs.

Please contact the members of the Committee and encourage them to either amend S2190 or hold it until the issues and concerns of gun owners can be properly addressed.

I love this law. Especially the part where a person has to prove to the government that they are a person "of good character and good repute in the community in which they live." Nothing like being required to prove to the government that you're good enough to enjoy the freedoms supposedly protected by the Constitution to remind you on which end of the prison-style rape you belong. Ben Dover. Glad to meet you Ben.

Hmm, State Police? Corzine wanted a Police State anyway. Glad that big guy beat him.

Maybe that committee will kill it. That card is but one step away from registration.

All citizens in NJ are evil until they are proven good by the State Police. That's one messed

up state.

Yep!

I completed the process in 1991. I had to complete a crimial check, MENTAL HEALTH CHECK, and they sent three letters to people that I was close to. Even after completing all this, they would not complete our paper work until they got all the letters back! .......OK........HERE IT COMES..........

THEY SEND A LETTER TO YOUR PLACE OF EMPLOYEMENT INFORMING THEM THAT YOU ARE APPLYING FOR FIREAREMS AND ARE YOU A GOOD EMPLOYEE? HAVE YOU BEEN AN ISSUE IN THE PAST? HAVE YOU HAD CONFRONTATIONS AT WORK WITH FELLOW EMPLOYEES???

Now you all know why I left!

Listen all,

I can hear the come on.......... or get real.... being directed at me now! I lived it!

I just hope, that NO ONE IN TENNESSEE THINKS THAT, "THIS CAN'T HAPPEN HERE"! Call me paranoid, OK, I can live with that! I just would hate to see the politicians get all crazy, thinking that they are doing the right thing for the people. Do something like that here! I know!! I hear you all exhaling, droping your heads and saying this guy is crazy.....Nope.. just saying, we need to vote, and look at who we are electing!

Take it for what it is.. I just hope that TGO does not rest on it laurels....

Oh for give my grammer and spelling, My dislexial is kicking in today!!.

I know threre were comments from "some" people that don't attack others on a personal level about my grammer and spelling. So Please Forgive me!!

Thank you

Don't worry about that word "crazy". It's the internet ninjas way of saying he or she doesn't

agree with you, because they already think they know everything.

Personally, I'd take it as a compliment.

I've heard bad stories about NJ in the past. I would have left, also. When we let our guard down,

that's when it usually takes place. Harder to fix afterwards.

North Carolina almost as bad.

You have to get a Pistol Purchase Permit for each handgun you want to buy, although you can use it to buy from an individual.

CCW permit allows you to bypass this.

The Pistol Purchase Permit is a left over Jim Crow law from 1919, initially enacted so that discrimination as to who owns arms could be effected on the local level.

Heck, 'Bama whole weapon carry system is still "may" issue, and handled by the individual sheriffs. Too bad if you've gotten on the bad side of one, even if you otherwise are legal to have one. Attorney friend of mine down there says it happens all the time.

It's not just the northeast that has onerous weapons laws. They may be worse, but bad is still BAD.

Good God What's next?

It's bad enough you have to have a "Firearms Purchasers I.D." card for any long gun,

A seperate pistol permit for each hand gun (including BB pistols),

To buy handgun ammo you have to:

Show your Firearms I.D. card

Sign a book with home phone # Drivers license, for any hand gun ammo Including .410,

One gun a month is a joke cause it takes 6-9 months to get your paperwork back,

Transporting a handgun to the range has it's own list of laws that can get you put in jail,

Even though Christy authorized a bear hunt, he is still anti-gun and anti-self defence.

As soon as I sell this house I will be a my little farm in the valley in Tennessee permanantly

and Jersey will never se my fat a** again! :D

We're glad to have you in TN and I agree, NJ is nuts on this latest effort. I also take your point to heart that things can change rapidly - all it takes is a party of loons to be in charge.

Absolutely right it could happen here, which is why we must remain vigilant. I love it when people say "Quit worrying - nobody is going to take your guns." The reason nobody will take my guns is precisely because I'm always worried about it. The minute we drop our guard, they will pass some draconian law that we will never get rid of (See: 1934, 1968, 1986).

I just moved here from the Presidents home state (no not Zimbabway) Hawaii and that place is out of control. Fingerprints and permits just to apply for a longgun. All guns are registered and you can't even own a gun till your are 21. The list goes on and on: mag cap of 10, no CCW, 14day wait for all guns, permits for all guns, and on and on. That state will never see another cent from me, ever!

Please stay active and vote. Or every state could end up like HI, MA, IL, NJ, NY, CA, WI and i'm sure there are more i'm missing.

Thanks for the post.

Edit: they also tried to ban pocket knives while i was there too. I'm talking about less than 4in kinves because 4in+ knives are already banned.

When used to slur someone on this forum, those are

best left off. When used to identify ideology within

a group or class, they are appropriate, leaving

crazy and nut off. You're point?
