The day the music died

I was on the road for 6 months with Tammy Wynette at that time; in the whirlwind of my own life at that moment, it was a sad addition to the daily events...

You likely saw enough sadness of your own then, travelling in the music business. Has to be tough and not like the glamour displayed on shows.

Like the OP...I was a young sailor on board the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69...we were on our return voyage from the Indian Ocean in 1980 after spending what would be 255 days at sea during the Iranian Hostage Crisis and the failed Operation Eagle Claw...left Norfolk,VA 4/15/1908 returned 12/22/1980

Did you know any of the guys in OC Division, by chance?

Same here, I was too young.

Comparing Cobain to Lennon is a stretch, but for impact his short career had, it is not such a stretch. I think the comparison comes from extreme change that occurred in at that time, which Nirvana (rightly or wrongly) is credited with started. There were better bands of that era, both artistically and effectively, however Cobain and Nirvana will always be remembered the most.

The biggest contrast in the Lennon/Cobain comparison is that the Beatles had for intents and purposes already run their course, and affected the changes that occurred. Nirvana, if they were indeed the catalyst that the Beatles were (they weren't) were only getting started.

Nirvana is my favorite band. I would say they were the greatest band of the 90s.

I was 12 years old, living in Dover Delaware. My dad was in the USAF and stationed there at the time. Didn't have a huge effect on me at the time.

I was in the Army at Ft Hood, TX. My first thought was that obviously no lessons were learned from the Son of Sam killings. NYC had a very high murder rate, no legal handguns, and an abundance of nutcases.

December 1980, I was stationed at NAS Jax FL. I had just checked in to my new squadron when I heard the news. At the time I really didn't care too much because of John Lennon's views on politics and the military but now that I'm older and realize how short life is.....

Hey dogguy, where were you in Kingsville? I ended up at VT-22 in 1984.

More than likely, since the guys from OC would have been up in Strike Ops working on air plans.

Today (12/7 - Pearl Harbor Day) I am up on CT (the town of Mystic); first time here - quaint little place. Cold up here but I think home is colder, at least for now.
