I hear this allot .40SW is most likely going to be smaller and lighter, then the .45ACP which is a bonus for carry. So what is your guys take on the 45GAP compered to the .40s&w?

In the same size gun I would go with the GAP.However I think all the gun and ammunition companies as well as the shooting community should refer to the GAP as the .45 Short or Special.Reason being that Glock will not acknowledge the name of another company on their guns. For example instead of .40 S&W,.357 Sig,or.45 ACP they mark the guns .40 auto.357 auto, and .45 auto:2cents:.

First, “Why did Glock do it Because Law Enforcement Agencies requested a 9mm/.40 sized pistol chambered in .45 caliber. Chuck Taylor has mentioned that he has been badgering Glock for years for the very same thing. So Glock partnered with Speer Ammo Company to figure out a viable solution regarding these customer requests. Some folks have stated that Mr Glock just wanted his name on a cartridge. Well, Mr Glock already has his name on 4.5 Million pistols, etc, and as such already has one of the most well known names on the planet.

As a result, in the first quarter of 2003 at the Shot Show, a surprise announcement was made by Speer and Glock that they had combined forces to create a new .45 G.A.P. caliber. This team decided that the compact .45GAP cartridge, which has equivalent performance to the .45ACP, would offer excellent functional reliability in 9mm/.40 sized pistols. A new Glock 37 model was announced to chamber this new caliber as well.

In reality, the first half of 2003 was development time to test, fine tune, and make the final production updates to the new .45 G.A.P. ammo and Glock 37 pistol. Thus, a number of significant changes were made to both the .45 G.A.P. ammo and the Glock 37 before being released to the public market in the second half of 2003.

So did .40s&w...

The 10mm was what the FBI asked for, and the agents pussed out. So, instead of going back to 9mm, they emasculated the 10mm into the .40s&w to save face for all the money spent on R&D.

I have no doubt that the .40s&w is a more practical choice than the .45gap, since they offer similar power, but the .40s&w offers significantly more ammunition capacity in an identical magwell.

But, for sure, the .45gap was the product envisioned by Glock and Speer when they started the process... they met their goal. Whereas .40s&w is the bastardized mutant offspring of the original 10mm design. I look at .45gap in the same way I do .357sig. It was designed to fit the power of an older, proven cartridge into the magwell of a mid-sized pistol which would fit most human hands. Both meet their objective.

.40 simply filled an unexpected niche in the marketplace, because it is very versatile. .45gap and .357sig are more specialized, and that is their only drawback for the average shooter.

I get the .40. (I don't like it, but I get it). I even get .357.Sig. But since Glock had to come out with a new pistol to handle the .45 GAP anyway, not just a replacement barrel, why not just make it .45 ACP?

whats so wrong with the 45 acp?

there must be a reason that it has been around for so long.

just my .02

I dont' see anything wrong with the .45ACP. In fact, it is my favorite gun and my carry piece. While mine is a bit on the heavy side, I fell like the intimidation factor of looking down the barrel of it, makes up for the weight.

Nothing wrong with .45acp except that up until recently, there were no double-stack pistols in this caliber which weren't huge. The XD-45, M&P 45, and even the Glock 21SF were significant improvements... which entirely negates the purpose of the .45GAP.

I suppose there is something to be said for a .45 caliber cartridge which will fit into a frame designed for 9mm and .40s&w... It saves some tooling costs, for sure. The Glock 37, 38, 39 all had redesigned uppers, however, which reduced the benefit... but the XD-45 GAP pistols are identical to the XD-40, except for the barrels and extractors... even the magazines are the same, exept for the way the feed lips are bent.

I do not believe the GAP is or will be a main stream caliber while the 40 S&W is possibly the best compromise caliber for pistols (semi auto) there is. The 40 has many loadings and platforms. The 40 is bigger than the 9mm but faster than the 45 ACP in standard loads. The 10mm takes a larger frame because of it's length and it causes problems for some folks.

I like the 40 S&W and have gone to it as my only centerfire handgun caliber.

I agree to a certain extent.

Quite a few agencies which previously used .40s&w have converted to .357sig (too many to list) and .45gap (NYS, PA, SC, and several others). The .45gap and .357sig will never threaten the predominance of .40s&w and 9mm, expecially for private citizens who carry for self-defense, but they will both be around for a long time, much like the 10mm. There is no denying the unique performance advantages of the .357sig, .45gap, and 10mm. Those advantages are simply not significant enough for most budgets to justify.

...XD-45...entirely negates the purpose of the .45GAP.

Exactly. If I can have 13+1 of good ol' ACP (which is already expensive enough), why would I get it in GAP?

All I carry is ACP. Carried it for 20 years in Navy. Saw no reason to change once I got out. It fulfills all my requirements in a weapon.:koolaid:
