Eagle viewing at LBL

The schedule of boat and van tours is not up for the 2010/2011 season on the LBL website (lbl.org) yet, but if you are interested in taking one of the cruises or van tours, they are taking reservations. Boat trips are 60 bucks per person, includes either lunch or brunch depending on the time. We're going on the cruise in January and then plan to do some hiking while at LBL.

Phone number is 1-800-LBL-7077 or 1- 270-924-2000

Had the pleasure of watching a baldy being attacked in mid-air by a couple of ospreys over Melton Hill Lake two summers back. Every time one of the ospreys would dive down at him, he'd roll over onto his back and fend them off with his talons. Quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen in real life.

My parents have a nesting pair of bald eagles that tend to spend the winter near their house. We've seen the two adults and one juvenile soaring overhead several times.

That would be great to see. When I lived on Whidbey Island, WA, there were nesting eagles within the family housing area and all around the bay. Here is a funny eagle story: we were at an aviation meeting about expanding the Bellingham, WA airport. One of the environmental guys said the increased use would disturb eagles in the area. At the time, I was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island (as an air traffic controller) and on the approach lights to runway 13 - so the lights were on poles in the water to the northwest of the airport - this big old eagle would come in and sit, watching the airplanes.

One of the guys in our group mentioned that to the environmental guy; his reply? Oh well, there are "tolerant eagle and intolerant eagles". Cracked us all up.

The closest I have been to one in the wild was a young eagle in Alaska - got to within about 6-8 feet. He hung around the station because the fish guts, etc were just tossed out and I think he also was the beneficiary of the occassional piece of chicken,

Eagles are just fabulous birds.

Wow - that would have been a sight. We are really looking forward to the boat trip and hope to make it down there before then - will depend on the weather. Maybe I will get lucky and can have some pics to share.
