I have also used the free version of Avast for years ...

I dont know if that is why but I did not have any problems with any updates. I have a machine running XP, one with Vista and now the Win-7. I did not have any problems with any of them....

Assuming you are addressing Jamie, thread is about probs with AVG not Avast, JFYI.

Figured I'd add this just for the hell of it... It's a fairly good run-down of the free anti-virus software that's available:

Best Free Antivirus Software

There are lots of other reviews out there but they don't differ enough from that one to matter, I think.

I've been using MS Security Essentials for several months now, and I love it. It just works. There is none of the other junk installed along with it like the other big name AV makers. You don't get the firewal, adn Identity Guard, etc. What you do get is good AV protection that is free.

I'm pretty sure it runs on XP too.

Simply my stupidity, I thought they were one and the same. I guess it is a good thing that I am not in charge of much and no one listens to me anyway:)

c) CC Cleaner scans monthly

That's all fine if you can get away with it, but my wife works from home on this machine sometimes, and the state won't let her make the connections to her office computer or any of the state's systems without there being anti-virus software on this computer.
