Glock serial number differences

Anyone know why some Glocks have "US" at the end of the serial number while some don't?

Glock has a factory in Smyrna, Ga. It is my understanding that some pistols are made in Austria and assembled here. I have heard also that this factory also

produces the entire gun for the South American market because some countries do not have licensing agreements with Glock in Austria.

There are some more knowledgeable than me on this board. My info came from a friends Daughter who works at Glock in Georgia. It's a couple of years old.

According to The Glock FAQ: glock_faq_serial_numbers the US at the end indicates it was imported into the US and I read somewhere that the last GLOCK pistol imported to Smyrna using the US ending serial number was in in the early 2000's.
