Shooting Gloves, your opinions

I am in the market for some good gloves for outdoor shooting during this time of year. I've been looking around and have found some options I like, but I'd like to get some real usage reviews.

What I'll be using them for:

outdoor shooting during colder months at the range

shooting piston and rifle

I like thinner gloves vs some of the more padded ones

Not looking to spend an large amount being that these will only get used 4-5 times a season

What gloves have you guys had good experiences using?

Never really bothered wearing them.

I brave it for range fun.

My wife has problems with her hands, so she got a pair of PAST recoil protection gloves. Maybe not what you were looking for since they do not have finger tips. They are thin and padded in the palm with a thick nylon mesh on the back. I tried them and they felt pretty good. I think they were only $20. Another throught is to use Mechanix work gloves. There are a huge number of types, so you can find something you like. They are also $20, but on sale for $15 or so all the time.

I do have pair of Mechanix gloves too, works well for everything so I would think you'd like them too.

If you go with mechanics gloves I'd recommend checking Walmart. I've owned a pair of Mechanix, Craftsman, and a cheapo Walmart pair and I liked the $5 pair from Walmart the best. They are really easy to get off and on and they fit my hands well.

The biggest assorment of gloves I've seen is at Lowes, in the gardening department. This may be out of season now! I like a very thin and tight glove for shooting my little, snappy abrasive pistols. Gloves are not needed with larger guns.

You might also check a motorcycle dealer. Some of the riding gloves have gel padded palms which is really nice. Shift makes a pair that I picked up for $20 at Yamaha Suzuki Kawasaki Honda of Cool Springs.

The main reason I am looking for them is the cold is hell on my right hand, year of various injuries to it has the cold causing a bad tightenign up and ache in real cold for a while.

In that case, try Thinsulate gloves. I think you can get them from JCPenney. They are really thin, but in all honesty, I don't think they keep you all that warm. They are also a little slick. Personally, I would stick with the Mechanix gloves. They will give you some warmth and you can pick a style to work for you.

Just for the record, I've been using my Mechanix gloves a bit more in the recent cold weather, and would not recommend using them as an outdoors cold weather glove. They're fine for going out to the car and grabbing a cold steering wheel, but I wouldn't push them much further than that.

I use Past gloves, but it is to control hard recoil rather than stay warm. I am assuming you are wanting some to keep your hands from freezing rather than tame some hot, big bore revolver rounds.

Underarmour glove 'liners' have grippy stuff on the palm & fingers but are thin enough for good dexterity. Obviously they aren't all that warm but I find them to be a a good compromise (don't like shooting with padded gloves) thickness vs insulation.

Air Force Flight Gloves... Very warm, but easy to operate firearms with them on... You can find them at USCav for $20ish.

May sound stranger, but I've found Mechanix and stretch neoprene water ski style gloves to be the most comfortable and they allow you to still feel the trigger, even a light trigger. They don't have all that extra material at the tips that tends to get in the way, but they're not going to be as warm as winter gloves. The neoprene style tend to be a little warmer, but I'd keep a pair of "hot hands" with you at the range.
