My 2002 Saturn SL2 no longer has a reverse. It was fine until I changed the trans fluid and filter. I drove it for a little bit, now have no reverse.

That happened to me also. I had never changed the trans fluid or filter on my Aztek, and one day i let the oil changing place talk me into doing this as the "manufacturer recommended it." That was the kiss of death for THAT tranny. About 1500 bucks later I was back in bidness. If no one recommends a place I will look up who got mine going and post.

For what its worth the labor to rebuild that transmission will be at or more than the book value of the car. I used to have one.

That trans has fuses(its all electronic) and if I remember correctly, 2nd and reverse are controlled by one. So, if it shudders or vibrates while shifting 1 to 3 and has no reverse, check the fuses. The valve body will also wear pretty badly on these things so that might also be the culprit. I can't remember much more than that, it's been a while since I had to deal with one.

I know of couple places in east TN. And yes, the rebuild will be very close to the value of the car. Unless it's in excellent shape, I'd think real hard about it. How many miles on the car and how many miles since last fluid change? What did the old fluid look like?

I have a '98 SL2 (5-spd)... 170k and counting.

Have you tried Lucas Transmission oil, I have used it in the past on a dodge when it would start slipping and it would make it work for about 5000 miles then I put it in again. I think its about $10 might be worth a shot.

I am not a transmission guy but no reverse in a Saturn is usually worn out control valve in valve body. Mr. Transmission in Madison--David and Jimmy Mitchell is who we send cars to.

I can vouch for Mr. Transmission in Madison...they took real good care of my wife's 01 Mustang GT Bullitt Edition...
