buck in velvet

Recommended Posts

took my buddy hunting and he shot his first deer saturday, it was a doe that field dressed at 85lbs. we took it to the processor and i saw a good 8pointer that was still in full velvet. i thought by the end of november all the velvet should be off, i found it odd. is it more common than i think?

They are uncommon but well documented. That is why we have antlered or anterless tags, not buck and doe tags. Here is a pic of a 10pt doe

We used to have buck and doe tags. You even had to make sure the genitals were still attached when you checked in a buck. Enough people checked in antlered does over the years so they changed the tags to with antlers and without antlers.

I once killed a pretty nice 8 point buck, the day after Thanksgiving, which was still in full velvet. The best I could tell, he didn't have any testicles, therefore I assume he lacked the testosterone that gives them the urge to rub the velvet off. I had a shoulder mount made of that deer just because it was rather odd.
