Favorite powder for 44 Magnum

I've worked up a light load for cast bullets using Unique powder. I understand this isn't the best powder for a full house 240 grain jacketed bullet load. WHat do you all like for this application? WW296, Power Pistol, H100,? What else?

For up to 250 grain bullets I use Alliant 2400. For heavier bullets either 2400 or H110/W296(same powder). 2400 is the powder Elmer Keith used to develop the 44 mag and it is more versatile than H110/296. It may not give the absolute max velocity but it gives the best combination of velocity and accuracy than any other powder I have ever tried in the 357/41/44 mags.

Plus one to Glockster's post RE: Alliant 2400 with cast bullets.

It's hard to beat in the 357/41/44 mag. with cast bullets.

Hope this helps.

...Leroy, do you use 2400 for jacketed bullets as well? ...

We did; it works fine for jacketed bullets.

....I agree with everyone on the 2400, very versatile, but 10 grs. of Unique behind a 240 gr. cast bullet ain't no plinker load. ...

I agree. We've burned a bunch of 8.5 to 9 grains of unique with the 240 and up hard cast bullets. They work very well.

I use 2400 for all of my magnum handgun loads. You can actually get slightly more speed from W296/H110 but you can't reduce the powder charge much with those.

2400 is a great magnum handgun powder and I have also had good luck with it in cast bullet rifle loads.

2400 is a great powder for 44 mag but several years ago i changed to aa9 which is the same as wc820 a little faster than 296 or 110 but much cleaner with out the big flash of some 44 mag powders
