OK well I thought I would share this image so everyone understands to always always always make sure there is no round in the chamber when cleaning your gun and on top of that don't put your hand in front of the barrel anyways even if you are 100% sure the chamber is cleared. Good gun safety and gun handling could have avoided this.

a freind of mine emailed me this he said his buddy was cleaning a .40 hand gun and thought it was unloaded

Rule #1: Keep guns unloaded until ready to use.

Rule #2: Always keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Rule #3: Keep finger out of trigger well until ready to shoot.

It isn't that tough. Honestly your buddy is a chowder-head if he succeeded in doing that kind of damage.

Holy Crap! Thats pretty bad and that'll definitely leave a major scar....is he able to use his hand fully or is it damaged to the point he wont have much use for it???

Holy crap that's gotta hurt. I can't believe that hole came from a .40. Another good reason to double and triple and even quadruple check your firearm BEFORE attemping to clean.

he said it was a SPRINGFIELD ARMORY XD SUB-COMPACT .40

I am having a hard time invisioning how he did this with this weapon, all the XD's I have ever seen have a grip safety, wait, I can see it now, he may have put his hand on the grip to hold the gun while he pushed the slide back with his other hand or at least started to push the slide back.

Man that has gotta be a bad feeling! Sorry for your friend...hope he heals up so he has use of that hand again.

IMHO, grip safeties give a false sense of security. They are not as beneficial as advertised.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with your rule #1

If that works for you good luck with that.

There are 4 main rules

As far as semi-autos and my pump shotgun goes they're loaded with an empty chamber, when I get my revolver, well, it'll be fully loaded but then muzzle control and keeping you dang finger out/off of the trigger is ALWAYS a must for safe gun handling.

Rule Number one a gun is always loaded. Hey does this mean Glocks are safer than the XD. Hope he mends well but that had to be just plain stupid. But thanks for sharing there are a lot of folks on this board that have no idea what kind of an exit wound a .40 or 9mm can make. Do you know if it was a jhp round.
