Where do folks get artillery ammunition

Funny question, I know. But sometimes at big, big gun events, I see people shooting off bigtime artillery (like at the Knob Creek festival). Where in the world do people actually get shells for that stuff?? I thought all projectiles above .50 cal were considered explosive devises and as such very heavily controlled by the feds. Yet I have seen plenty of people shooting that stuff off.

Most just reload their own. The ammo isn't regulated unless it is high explosive (HE). All of the 40mm stuff that guys shoot is training or chalk rounds. The bigger stuff is just solid projectiles. I guy I know that has a 90mm turns his own "bullets" down on a lathe and then reloads them into brass he bought.

As long as there is not HE in the projectile, it is not regulated.

I was watching a show about the guys in AZ that shoot 37mm anti-tank guns, 75mm tank guns, etc. They said that they manufacture their own rounds from solid brass, lead, etc. They prefer the harder metals since they are shooting into a sand area they can retrieve their rounds for reuse after cleanup.

The 40mm GL stuff is just practice rounds that can be reloaded. Some places sell kits for reloading them.

HE stuff requires a $200 stamp per ROUND. Not too many people have the money or inclination to do that each time.
