Westboro protesters face jeers and slashed tires | Tulsa World

I read the story off blackfive.

McALESTER - Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the protests.

More than two dozen law-enforcement officers - state troopers, sheriff's deputies and city police - formed a security cordon around the Westboro protesters.

"We're here to protect everyone," Miller said.

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that "God hates America" because it tolerates homosexuality.

Protesting at funerals, preaching hate, dishonoring fallen soldiers, mmm what a wonderful congregation that must be.

Where is the "Shoots someone in the head" smiley?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This church gives good bible believing God fearing Baptist churches a bad name. I wish there was a way to force them to take that part of their name out. But alas, the 1st amendment gives and takes away. Freedom is still freedom to be stupid, offensive, and borderline evil. May God have mercy on them for using His name in this manner.

I guess that born again stuff doesn't always work out for the best.

Not a big Bible type person but my experience has been that most people use the religion not as a guide but as a justification for what they would do anyway.

Funny to me is that the founder was a huge civil rights attorney in the 60s.

That's two strikes against him, Daniel. Maybe the founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center will take him

when his church fails.

Good article, too. Thanks. I expect there will be more of this to come until they go away.

May he not may he have no mercy on these idiots, losers, and miscreants that give all baptist a bad name. May he treat them like he treated sodom and gamorah and destroy them and their wicked ways.

Amen.

Oh, I don't think He needs to pull out the big guns for 100 people or less, can save that for 'Nooga and Memphis.

I don't get the link between God hate's America and protesting at Military funerals.

They believe that God is punishing the US by killing our soldiers, police, youth, etc because the US tolerates homosexuality. They protest mainly military funerals, but they have tried to protest others. There was an incident awhile back somewhere here in TN where a girl got killed in a car wreck or something and they were going to protest because she was a pregnant teenager. The sheriff basically said he wouldn't be responsible for anything that should befall them, because people didn't take to kindly to that in his county. They never showed up.

I dont' keep up with every think that group does other then I know who they are and I am against what they do. If anyone hears of them planning a protest in East TN give me a heads up via PM and if available I will try to be there in support of the families of the service man/woman against them. I don't have a working motorcycle to help with the honor guard escort but if nothing else I might be able to be there in body.
