Eddystone m1917

I have an Eddystone that I purchased about 10 years ago. When I did purchase it, the barrel was pretty bad. It still shoots great, is there somewhere where I can purchase a barrel for it? I know that they will not be new, just need something that is not pitted.

I don't know if you all have shot a WW1 m1917 in 30.06, they are awesome! IMO, this thing kicks less than a Garand, for a bolt action!

Any help would be greatful!

CMP sells new criterion barrels. If you want a great shooter, its the way to go!

The only caution I would have is,.. Eddystones were torqued really tight when they were initially barreled they have a tendency to crack during a rebarrel

I think Hatchers Notebook first mentioned it,.. the barreling machine was set tight and wasn't discovered for quite some time,..

the good news however is that they were also rifled tight,.. even dark these old irons shoot very well I bought one and spent 2 weeks cleaning the bore,.it went from a dark to a look almost akin to bead blasted but with decent edges on the rifling.... shoots about 4" @ 100 with my Garand Reloads..I have heard of folks having success with longer jacketed or lead bullets in the accuracy dept.

I would further research this maybe through the CMP or their message boards before sending it out to rebarrel you could lose a nice piece of history...

Like LngRngShtr said, be careful of getting an Eddystone rebarreled. If the old barrel is not removed properly the receiver has a very good chance of cracking. Tons of information out there about it.

Becuase of a relief cut that must be made to get the old one off it's very difficult to find an original barrel. If you really must do it that CMP barrel is the way to go. That same barrel from Midway is significantly more and does not have the necessary modifications as does the CMP version.

Personally, I wound't worry about the pitting. My Remington 1917's bore looks like the surface of the moon but the rifling is strong and it shoots great.

You are right! My bore looks like the moon, yet it does seem to shoot pretty good groups. I had heard the store about the Eddystone's cracking, did not know it was that bad! Thanks for the heads up! I guess for a barrel made in 1918, it shoots pretty good then!

I got this back in the 80's and the barrel was split down the middle. It took about a year to get another barrel for it. Could not get 2 land rifling all I could get was a GI replacement with 4 lands. Had a friend back home cut and install it for me. Found all new GI wood and put it together. I can keep about a 3 ft. group at 1000 yards. a friend of mine kept 8 out of 10 shots in a 11 in.

People show far too much concern for pitted barrels. If it shoots good, SHOOT IT!!!

Yea, keep the barrel and receiver together.

There is some good history there that just can't be replaced by screwing in (and maybe even screwing up) a 2011 barrel.
