Mosin Nagant Current Pricing

Asking for a friend, since I know they have gone up since I bought my $50 M44 back in '04. Rifle in question is an M38, blond wood stock. 1938 Izhevsk production. The rifle finish and stock are in excellent condition, bore looks good. Only real negative is that the bolt looks well used, and the handle has lost most of its finish. What would you all place the value as?

I thought that M38s were a bit more 'scarce' than other models and, therefore, worth a little more? Am I wrong? I haven't even seen many 91/30s for $100 or less, lately.

Depends on a few things. First, do all # match (bolt, receiver, magazine, and butt, stamped not electropenciled)? Then, has the gun been messed with (refinished stock, modded, not original?) Has the gun been repaired/refurbished by an arsenal? And, as you stated, has it been heavily used (dinged, worn, bore, counterbored)?

Pictures would definitely help.

M38 are more rare, and several were arsenal refurbished after WWII. Several are now on M44 stocks, not M38 stocks. This will also impact value.

Outside pricing sources: gunsnammo.com, www.allans-armory.com sometimes have a few in stock. gunboards.com - has a huge Mosin Nagant section in its forum. With a large # of collectors posting. Good place for figuring out pricing.

I prefer that the bolt and receiver match... that said, most of the m38s I've seen are 200-250 if they match... you must be c&r holder to make it worth buying from the surplus dealers but the sites listed above are great.

'Rare' is relative. Considering the millions of Mosin Nagant rifles made, the M38 is 'rare'. But a huge number of those M38s was imported into this country. I have heard it was almost 20,000. Until the market manages to completely absorb these rifles, prices will remain not much higher than other Mosin types.

I just bought a Mosin Nagant from Bud's but it hasn't arrived yet. I really don't know what condition it's in but it was only $95 including shipping to Tennessee. Their site actually describes it as "factory new." I don't know how that could be. I will let you know what it looks like when I get it.

If all matching in an M38 stock in good condition, with good bore. I'd venture to say retail is $200+, but with that said I would pay somewhere around $175. This model has become scarce on the market and its re-sale/collectible value has went up alot!
