I got tased tonight!

As part of the Clarksville Citizen's Police Academy, the CPD gives a presentation and a demonstration of non-lethal force. The center piece of this demo was the taser. Seven of us, four men, three women all took a standard five second "ride" from a police issue Taser X3.

I have to say, it was an experience I hope to never repeat.

Citizen's police academy... Law Enforcement's way of talking people into letting them tase them, and making 'em think it was a good idea. :)

Walton, when is "Fun with Pepper Spray" night? :(

To clarify, I'm not a LEO, just a citizen interested in what police work is about. And yes, as people have noted, its hilarious to the cops that people would VOLUNTEER for this treatment. For me, I suppose it was a macho thing. I've been pepper sprayed by accident before, now I've been tased. I will pass on being shot.

Get sprayed often enough and you don't even notice the stuff. Electricity, on the other hand, I don't think you can develop an immunity to.

A friend of mine who used to work night security at the Knoxville Zoo (I think they were special deputies back then) knew a regular officer who would either spray himself a little or spray a little pepper spray on his fingers and wipe it on his eyelids (can't recall which, exactly) every night before going to bed so that (he believed, at least) he would be 'innoculated' to it in case he ever caught 'splashover' or someone sprayed him. Having had to get sprayed in order to carry it for his job, my buddy was basically like, "More power to him but I ain't doing it."

I have even heard that people who eat a lot of hot chiles can develop a bit of immunity to OC spray. Maybe that is why some 'experts' recommend that folks carry spray with some kind of chemical agent (tear gas, etc.) in it, as well.

When I worked at the downtown library in Knoxville, the guys who did security there were school division deputies. They told me about an incident at the Weigel's on Summit Hill (just say 'the Weigel's to most people from the area and they know exactly which one you are talking about) where an officer sprayed a person of Hispanic lineage with OC spray. Apparently, it hurt just enough to piss the guy off and he proceeded to take the can of spray away from the officer, hose him down with it (the spray had a much greater effect on the officer than on the perp) then beat the crap out of him.

Used to work with an officer, that everyone knew if he pulled his spray ( Freeze +P ), EVERYBODY within a certain radius was going to get at least a little... so I was pretty much resistant to the stuff withing the first month.

Tasing, from what I've seen, is dependent on your body chemistry, and how well you conduct electricity... If the current gets through, it just overrides your own nervous system. So in a way, a Taser is sort of like a bullet... it either hits the target or it don't.

Pepper sprays on the other hand attack the nerve endings themselves, so those can become immune to the stimulus with enough exposure.

Personally, I'd rather just skip the whole affair, and not have to deal with any of it. :)

I can say this about OC spray. If you are really congested to the point where a neti pot or a nose douche won't do anything you can take a paper bag, spray just the littlest squirt of oc into it and wait a moment for the aerosol to die down a bit inside the bag. Then take a small huff of it into the nose. Have paper towels handy cause everything inside those sinus cavities is going to come flooding out in a matter of seconds. Crazy, momentarily unpleasant, but highly effective.

... or you can just have some wise-ass co-worker spray some into the defroster ducts of your patrol car, when you run into the station to drop off paperwork.

Either one will clear that winter time sinus congestion right up.
