Just read the article on the new S&W TFP (Ti. firing pin).

I am surprised that it took this long for them to figure out about Ti firing pins?

The writer makes it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. I have been shooting my 1911's with Ti firing pins since '94. I know that any of you dyed in the wool guys are familiar with them too!

1200.00$ for a marketing trick?

So what's the magic behind a titanium firing pin?

What do you mean, what's the magic? Don't you know titanium is only mined on the moon and from mars or from passing comets. They built the SR71 out of titanium. In the incredible heat of a gun the titanium can stretch up to 7" w/o breaking.

Titanium is used for a couple of reasons. With the lighter firing pin and stronger firing pin spring you can eliminate the series 80 style firing pin safety and it will decrease lock time by a couple of milliseconds.
