Colt CZ40 Pistol

Hello,

About six months ago I bought a Colt CZ40 from a guy for very little money. It was almost brand new in the original box, paperwork/tags and has had less than 1 clip through it. I love shooting it, but was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. The underside of the barrel has stamped Made in the Chech Republic and I know it was a short lived venture between Colt and CZ.

I have had several people try to buy it from more than I paid for it, but was wondering if anyone here knew anything about the pistol/worth in more detail than what I have been able to find.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Cant tell you much, but i almost bought 1 at Darr's in Chatt. in about 95 or so. He had just gotten it and it was NIB and was about $280. or so, i looked and handled it, but seemed to much like a Colt 1911 which i hate and so i passed.

About 3 weeks later i saw an article on these in a Major GunMag and all i remember is that they said since so few were made, it was worth about $1200-1500.

So i went back to Darrs and it was sold and he could get no more, but seems collector's of both CZ and Colt do want these.

The guns were well made and worked fine, but some problem between Colt and CZ ended production!

So they seem to be worth a lot or were about 15 yrs ago!

Does it actually say Colt Z 40 on the slide? If so that is a very, very rare gun.

According to an old Blue Book "...while approx. 750-800 pieces were mfg. 1998-1999 by CZ for a Colt subcontract, they were never shipped, and as a result, very few have made it into th U.S. to date from the Czech Republic"

Thanks for your response...The actual wording on the side says: ColtZ40 (written in some kind of script) followed by, Cal.40 S&W and stamped on the underside of the barrel is says Made in the Chech Republic.

One of the guys that tried to buy it told me it was a collectors item to some.

Is it a CZ-40B or maybe a CZ-40P? If it's a true ColtZ40 (basically a 40B with the Colt markings/name) I'd hold onto it for a while at least, as who knows...

Here's a review with a pic of one of the 40P's: CZ 40P P-01 Review Here's a good right up on the Colt/CZ history and the 40B: https://www.student.gsu.edu/~ggingco1/40b/hist.htm

If so, either way that's a cool gun that may or may not (but probably will) go up in value to the more enthusiastic CZ-fans (and they're out there for sure).

From what I've read about them CZ and Colt had decided to team up to produce some models to simultaneously boost both Colt's and CZ's profiles and each other's popularity. Anyways, the deal pretty much fell through, but CZ released a couple guns that were co-developed anyway in limited-runs and a few different variants.

The 40B's already have a cult-like following as they're a "CZ-75-wrapped-up-in-a-1911-shape", and the the 40P's have a rep as just an awesome all-around duty/carry/fun gun as they were made by CZ taking left over slides that were supposedly meant for 40B's or other Colt/CZ collaborations that weren't going to happen as Colt pulled out so CZ stuck the slides onto P-01 lowers, basically hatching a pretty bad-ass pre-P-06 P-01 in .40s&w cal. except with a slightly longer barrel... they're supposed to be great guns and their following is growing.

CK1,

From the links you provides above, I am not sure what to make of mine....In the pictures in the 2 links above, it is more of a block lettering. Mine is more of a script and is stamped 98 by the ejector port. Like this one from the CZ Forum they provided:

You'll be able to get better info over at the czforum, but think those guns a fairly rare, so might be worth holding on to or give you the option of trading it for another CZ you might prefer...

"98" near the ejection port usually means it was made in 1998, that would make it a real early possibly even more rare one as if you read that article on the 40b's I linked you to again it starts out "the earliest one's I've seen were from 2000...", you might have a good find in your hands there.
