I am talking to someone about getting their permit and he asked about the range requirements.

I can't remember.

Can someone help me out?

How many rounds at what distance and how many hits are needed to pass?

I think the standard is 15 rnds at 3 yds, 15 rnds at 7 yds, and 15 rnds at 15 yds.

Remember these just have to hit the torso. I cannot remember the distances, but I do remember shooting 48 rds for some reason.

IIRC it is 12 rounds @ 3,7,15 and 12 @ discretion of instructor all shots in torso count. in other words, nothing to worry about at all. If you can breathe you can probably pass.

Tell your friend not to worry. I had never fired a handgun before the class, and I passed. If I could adapt and correct major weaknesses after one shooting session, I'm sure your friend will do fine.

I didn't even realize we were taking a test until I was told to take down my target so it could be scored. Even then I didn't think much of it. I didn't even realize there were any requirements until after the break when the instructor said that we had all passed the shooting requirements for the state.

If you give your friend numbers he'll probably obsess over them and be more likely to perform worse. Tell him to just go out there and learn and have fun at the same time.

Yup, ask anyone here I worried about it far more then I should have. I even went out and brought a couple of the test targets and built me a hanger for them, shot them up and posted pictures asking if it would pass. My target in the class was far better.

I planned taking the class about a year before I could. I was about to take it then my wife got laid off from work so I had to put it on the back burner for almost a year.

During that year I went out and shot about once a month making sure I was proficient with the pistol I planned to test with.

Then I obsessed over the numbers which was really unnecessary.

Since you are already helping your friend, do what I am now doing with my wife. Work the basics. I am teaching her proper gun handing, making sure she knows what to do if there is a problem with the gun. Still working on proper grip and aim but she would past the shooting part right now I think. The torso is a big target at 3 and 7 yards. As I understand you can miss everything at 15 and still pass as long as you do well at 3 and 7.

48 rounds total

I do not know if there is a standard of not as to the distances per shots., some at each distance.

My class was something like

3 yrds 6 rounds Fire called by instructor

7 yrds 6 round Fire called by instructor

15 yrds 6 rounds Fire called by instructor

3 yrds 6 rounds Begin by instructor, then continue at your pace

7 yrds 6 round Begin by instructor, then continue at your pace

15 yrds 6 rounds Begin by instructor, then continue at your pace

6 more rounds I don't remember how we where told to fire them or the distance

but the last 6 I certainly remember. 3 yrds and as fast as we could, while aiming

For a total of 48 rounds.

It was the first time I had ever been part of a firing line and I have to say it was fun and something I want to do again sometime

Vontar if I remember correctly, and I could be wrong but I believe the last 6 rounds at 3 7 and 15 he (mike) gave the command fire at will. So basically when we loaded up we could shoot as fast as we wanted or as slow as we wanted. I remember emptying the Sigma 40VE as fast as I could pull the trigger and still hitting center mass with every shot.
