James McMurtry, heard of him before but never really listened, I like it.

Yep, some of his stuff is great. Well, maybe a majority of his stuff is great but I can't personally appreciate much of it. Many of the songs of which he seems proudest, are slower-tempo songs of the general theme "life sucks". I don't personally enjoy low-tempo downer tunes, though they may be good songs otherwise.

OTOH Choctaw Bingo is an all-time favorite and there are several youtube performances of that song very listenable. The studio version, an electric live version, and a really good acoustic live version. He seems to be "almost embarrassed" by that one however. Perhaps because it is one of his most popular, or maybe it was intended to be an uptempo tongue-in-cheek "life sucks" song about texarkana okie rednecks, but all the rednecks accepted it as an anthem and made him some fame and fortune in "the wrong way". :)

The Gold Coast by Nelson Demille. Audiobook, good one. Too lazy to read right now.

Alabama Shakes would be a fun band to play in.

Spirit was one of the better "quasi-obscure" bands of the late-1960's--

I can't stop listening to this song. I just recently discovered Joe Bonamassa, but I'm now a huge fan.

Thanks, hadn't heard Joe Bonamassa. For some reason I assumed he was a jazz/fusion guy, dunno why. That's neat stuff.

Lester,

The Alabama Shakes it pretty cool. Thanks for posting it.

And now some JJ Cale

JJ Cale is good stuff.

Lonely Island-Great day

That song is a hoot!

Youtube has a lot of obscure stuff as old as I am.

If you search Youtube for "sea train band" can find most of their stuff, but there is some other contemporary north eastern cover party band that is extremely average which adopted the name and posted some real average cover demos on youtube, and other references that are also not the Sea Train of which I speak.

They recorded two or possibly three albums, The first album was psychedelic proto-fusion then they moved from frisco to the woodstock vicinity and released a quasi-country album in the ballpark of The Band. AFAIK, both albums produced by George Martin, not bad for "anonymous unknowns". Excellent players.
