Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall [Live]

From NPR's All Things Considered, October 5, 2005 - One day in late January, Larry Appelbaum was thumbing through some old Voice of America audiotapes about to be digitized at the Library of Congress when he made a discovery that would stun him and many other jazz fans.

Eight 10-inch reels of acetate tape were labeled "Carnegie Hall Jazz 1957." One of the tape boxes had a handwritten note on the back that said "T. Monk" with some song titles.

Appelbaum, a jazz specialist at the Library of Congress, got excited at the prospect of finding unpublished materials by the jazz master Thelonious Monk. Then he heard another distinctive sound. "I recognized the tenor saxophone of John Coltrane and my heart started to race," Appelbaum says.

The Nov. 29, 1957, concert was recorded by the Voice of America but never broadcast. For years, the recordings were lost and forgotten. Now, thanks to Appelbaum's discovery, Blue Note Records is releasing them.

This has been playing on my system a lot, recently. The bill for the entire night is one of the most amazing I've come across... too bad the entire night hasn't been found...

Brent, Monk and Trane together is about as good as it gets for that genre. I didn't realize that they had found new material from those two, I'll have to check that out.

Love Uncle Tupelo, and really love the Anodyne EP. Too bad Jay Farrar and company was coming unraveled at this point. So evident when you listen to the lyrics.

Love the song Fifteen Keys, but I could listen to whole EP repeatedly and often do.

I concur. It's really good. I've been on a Jazz kick lately, and I hardly listen to anything else. I found this at McKay's in chattanooga, hardly touched, for 8.95$. I also got a 2 disc set of Charlie Parker and CP/Miles Davis for 8.95 (unopened) on the same trip.

I know others have mentioned Wilco, a great band that will have at least a FEW songs that most anyone on this forum would be able to stomach.

For some of you cats who dig more out there things, check out The Flaming Lips. I'm a fan of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots".

For some interesting music, Neero, check out this page. Its an error page for Selmer France... http://www.selmer.fr/error.php Good music, just throw it up on a background page. Don't ask me why I know this. (You may have to click on the Union Jack to get the sound to work, I did)

I can always be found with Pink Floyd nearby. I've always said if for some reason I had to choose one album as the only one I could ever listen to, it would be Pink Floyd - The Wall. I love that album!

I also am a huge Rush and Jethro Tull fan. I just recently discovered Govt. Mule. Can't believe I've been missing out on them all these years.

For some new stuff, I've been getting into Day of Fire. They are a Christian band that sounds a lot like Nickelback.

I always thought if there was but one I could have, it would be a hard choice between Beethoven's 9th and Dark Side of the Moon, both having to do with dejection and redemption.
