I got tickets to see him in Charlotte. Due to delays in finishing the new album it was moved from may to September. However they did send a digital dl of the new album. It's a goodun.

Didja get some of that on your trip?

You have to know Slash from Guns 'N' Roses and David Lee Roth from Van Halen to get this. It's Slash auditioning Roth to fill in on vocals, now that Axl's left the band and Slash has gone on to form Slash's Snakepit. Got it?

Nice Jack. I have that track on a cassette single, lol.

Right now it's Deryl Dodd's cover of Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot.

Slacker Radio>Pandora, by the way.

A Cassingle? They did singles on CDs, too. Both were the height of ripping us off. Downloaders are screwing them back.

Hard.

That was quick. I knew I might see you here soon. Might see another local next. But really. Is there much worth even owning anymore? No matter how you get it?

Well, technically, you own nothing you paid for - you are paying for a license.

That aside, sure, there's tons of great music out there.

Regardless, anyone who thinks music ought to be free needs to understand that downloading stuff without paying for it screws the artist - NOT the labels. Everyone gets hurt, but the artists feels it the most.

Don't think the great music you love will ever go away? Keep stealing it - recordings still cost a LOT of money to do right.

The bands that I meet tell me they get their money from touring and merch, which is the way I like to support them. If I know they'll sell a disc at the tables, especially the little guys with their own labels, that's where my money goes. And I'm super happy to give it to them directly. When I met Peter Steele from Type-O- Negative, he said the downloaders composed a huge portion of their live audiences and that he was happy to see them how ever they came to him. Because they got what they wanted from merch and not from the pennies per album from the labels.

And yes, you can tell alot from a DL with artifacts in the audio, the clipping off of the first and last seconds of songs.

"Great music?" People in audio backgrounds will always find music they love. For me, the great music always comes in the form of film scores. My popular collection has collected dust for 10 years. I buy soundtracks for their purity of sound. Yeah, I hate that I don't find a lot of score music, but no one's asking them to make many, so I watch movies more to make up for what's missing in my collection.

Can you locate a near-virgin copy of the first "Lethal Weapon" or "Die Hard" soundtracks? That's all I want, now that Michael Kamen's dead.

All the other new popular stuff floating around? I don't need any of it. Free or otherwise. But I do like to see egotistical labels brought down from their inflated sense of worth. I was very happy to see them get the point and sell CDs at $10 instead of $17. THAT'S when I bought the last album I could remember. Metallica's "St. Anger". Such a let down. For my wife, it was "Chinese Democracy" and we haven't had any hope of new stuff since.

Think chicken/egg. The reason so many bands make their money off touring now is because so many folks have NO problem stealing music.

I dunno, I don't really care what people charge in a free market economy. I certainly don't begrudge labels charging as much as they can for a product - it's what any successful business does.

I used to work in the video production and post-production arena. We're from similar backgrounds as far as heirarchy in the entertainment industry. You get paid either way, regarding the success of a release, unless you're crafty with the contracts to get a slice on the back end as well. I'm 39. The music I grew up on is GONE. Left up to the occasional reunion trip. Tora Tora were my friends. We used to hang out at their warehouse club by the Liberty Bowl. They did their 20th anniversary dates around Memphis for a solid year to commemorate last year. Saw them twice. Patrick, the bassist, said the third CD is finished but the labels wouldn't push it after grunge came out. It's not been released yet. If they have the rights to press it, I'll buy it regardless of having not heard it. That's how I give an artist my vote of confidence and support. But there's not many that Kathy and I want to support.

Going to see Scorpions Sunday, to tell them "Thank you and we're here if you decide not to retire."
