This morning while getting ready for work I was listening to The Black Keys album El Camino (just bought it the other night - first time I've listened to it.)

In the car on the way to work, I was listening to a Blue Moon Rising CD.

Both good stuff.

Oh, and the first thing I listened to this morning - I have Slayer's "Seasons in the Abyss" set as the alarm tone on my cell phone alarm clock.

This isn't so much about what I'm listening to, but how... A week or so ago, I happened across an old mp3 player I bought for my wife probably 10 years ago. She used it for a year or so, then quit and it's been sitting since. For whatever reason, my garage is a black hole for radio waves and the radio I've got will only pick up 1 station that I like.

The radio in the garage has an RCA auxillary input, so I had the bright idea to load up the mp3 player with my preferred music and plug it in. No staticy radio reception, no listening to the same 4 songs by the same 20 or so artists on endless loop.

After much consternation, I finally coaxed my new PC to talk to the win XP era mp3 player. It literally took being plugged in for 2 days for the player to gain enough juice to turn on and function. When it finally did get charged, I was surprised that it worked just fine and had retained all the songs in it memory, which was encouraging. I removed her music, loaded it up with mine, and viola! Worked like a charm.

I spent most of the day sunday working in the garage building a shelf and servicing the brakes on the wife's minivan. It was nice that my only source of frustration was two galled studs courtesy of the idiots at the tire store, rather than having heard the same Skynrd song 3 times before lunch.

Last year I bought a new stereo for my truck, and it has a USB port on it. I bought a 32 GB USB drive that literally is no bigger than a thumbnail. You barely even notice it when it's inserted. In fact I had to attach the little string that came with it just so I could grab hold of it to remove it from the stereo. Anyway, It's only half full and I have nearly 200 albums on the drive, after removing the songs I don't care for from each album, so there is nothing but favorites. I put the stereo on random and it's like my own personal commercial free radio station. It's been forever since I've listened to actual radio waves.

I'll never own another car stereo that doesn't come with a USB port.

Old stuff that I just found a cd of. The Ides of March. Chicago/BS&T-like group from the early 70s. Their big hit was Vehicle, followed by Superman. Lead singer by the name of Jim Peternik, who later had hits with Survivor--Eye of the Tiger, and some middle of the road soft rock.

Anyway, always liked them.

Podcasts.   I recently went on vacation and "discovered" them. I installed an app on my phone called Podcast Addict and it goes out and connects me to several podcast subscriptions. My favorites are "Stuff you should know"  and "Stuff to Blow your mind". I like the weird and quirky informational Podcasts. There are literally thousands of podcast feeds from just about any topic that could possibly interest you.

Apocalyptica, Escala, Lindsey Stirling, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, basically Symphonic Metal/Rock/Techno/House/Electronic/etc. Anything mixing very old school instruments with very new school sounds. Tempest even rocks the hell out of some bag pipes and beat-boxes with a didgeridoo.

Most favoritest Tom Waits ablum, 1975. Don't play it loud at work, bad attitude and occasional bad words. Lots of good songs and funny lines. The pathos of "Warm Beer and Cold Women" at 38:31 is outstanding.

I don't buy too many albums these days with the advent of Spotify and the like, but Dominican Sisters of Mary are going to get my $12.

Their Mater Eucharistae is well worth a listen even if like me, sacred music not your normal genre:

On Spotify:  Bogdanowicz, OP, Sir Joseph Andrew – Bogdanowicz: Holy Mary, Mother Of God
