question about the public defender

Why does everyone only talk about the 410 shotgun shell being used in gun?;) I looked at the gun for home defense and everything was about the 410 at 7 yards. Well, I have places in the house that are farther than that. What can someone tell me about the accuracy of the 45 colt round through this gun? I want the smaller gun to carry sometimes. Thanks for the info.

My guess on why the 410 is the key point of discussion is that is the key feature separating this revolver from others. Most people looking to shoot 45 would likely look at dedicated 45 revolvers.

The 45 colt works ok in it from what I have seen. I shot it from 5 yards on out to about 30 yards just to see how it worked. It was not bad, but it didn't seem to have the accuracy of other 45 colt revolvers that I own. I am not a expert, but from looking over the gun I think there are two main reasons. The bullet spends more time in the cylinder before it reaches the rifling due to the added length need for the shot shell. The length of the 45 colt rnd is aronud 1.5 inches so it has about a inch of travel in a standard judge before it reaches rifling and its not a very snug fit. Second was that I heard that the rifling was thinner (I am sure there is a proper word for this) in the judge line then a standard 45 revolver so the 410 shell would work. Again I may be wrong its just my thinking.

The Box O' Truth #41 - The Taurus Judge Vs. The Box O' Truth - Page 1 This was something I read on it awhile back. It was done before the federal and winchester 410 personal defense ammo was out.

The twist in the rifling of the Judge has been reduced to help prevent the shot from the .410 rounds from donutting. This makes the 45LC round less accurate. Donutting is when the centrifugal force cause by the shell spinning in the barrel (Rifling) causes the shot to be slung outward when it leaves the barrel. A smooth bore judge would be much better, but that is illegal. If it were a smooth bore it would be considered a sawed off shotgun.
