So, is it safe to assume I may be the only member of the TGO community attending (work-permitting) The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear?

I don't like crowds. Of any flavor. It may be a phobia gradually acquired from 30 years playing club music gigs. Or maybe the phobia would have developed anyway, naturally accompanying old age dementia.

But even if considering the unpleasant prospect of spending hours in a crowd, even something extremely painful like a Pentecostal prayer meeting or a Madonna concert would be bliss compared to the pain of attending that event. In gun-free Washington no less!

Why in the world would you want to torture yourself like that?

I like a good comedy too. Jon Stewart ain't that funny to go to Washington though. Good luck with that and try to avoid the Union recruiters for the 99. The "professional" non working class of 'Merica. Sing Kumbaya for us, ya hear.

Too bad you can't make it. Besides comedy, recent polling shows Jon Stewart as our nation's most trusted news-person, so besides the comedy, there is a certain level of legitimacy inferred in the event.

What are these "Union recruiters for the 99? Must've missed that...

If the opportunity to sing "Kumbaya" presents itself, I'll surely be surprised, and will indeed sing along for you in your stead.

If the opportunity to sing "Kumbaya" presents itself, I'll surely be surprised, and will indeed sing along for you in your stead, despite the fact that I'm an atheist and that the "my lord" part seems a little silly to me as I don't believe in talking snakes and such (just kidding, I'm catholic, which if you're a baptist means I may or may not see you in hell depending on which interpretation of the good book or convient re-interpretation you're currently into, lol!).

Look, you need to get right with the religions. Jews don't recognize Jesus. Protestants don't recognize the pope and Baptists don't recognize each other at Hooters. ;)

(I hope there is that stupid smiley face thing there, I hate emoticons)

I'd love to go, keep fear alive and all, but I'd rather be passing out candy on Halloween.

Seems that the folks who have been out 99 weeks already have unionized so they can get another 20 weeks of un employment benefits.

I can't find a link and it was on that news channel you won't turn on so don't worry bout it.

"Fear" to me is that anyone will go and listen to all that drivel but knock yourself out man. It will be all about feelings anyway. Facts will remain elusive as always.

I edited my post almost immediately as I realized what sounded as just being clever and funny to my ears may have gone too far and could offend the more sensative among us... sorry for any disrespect if taken, was purely joking.

Lester, my reason for attending is simple: when my children are old enough to understand, and wonder what I was doing in this strange time when our national discourse was at this ridiculous and counter-productive, partisan-propaganda-spinned state, I'll have evidence that I was aware of the foolishness of the discourse enveloping us as a nation and that it was not lost on me. That's all.

man, that was my best joke. Don't ruin the lead in!

As for the worst time ever and all that everyone thinks that about their generation. But it is standard practice in the US of A. And it has been that way since the country was founded.

Hi CK1

Have fun! Life is short so enjoy whatever rattles yer cage. The event sounds as least as unbearable as Glenn Beck's recent shindig up there. But different strokes and all that.

Sturgeons Law: 99 Percent of Everything is Crap

Harlan Ellison: The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity.

Zappa's Corrolary: There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life.

Further on the Zappa kick: People will agree with you only if they already agree with you.

Rightwinger, with real genuine respect, if only judging by your handle and your few words, there's little doubt that there's not very much you would have to offer to a discussion concerning our national discourse free or beyond your seemingly obvious alligence to a partisan ideology... That said, I consider the Rally an excellent opportunity for those to show that they're not buying any of the BS being sold and welcome the free demonstration of seriousness mixed with comedy and satire.

Forgive me if I am going to far, but please remind yourself that the ideology you currently have in-favor considers you inconsequential unless your net worth or owned-business is greater than or equal to a million dollars or so plus, and otherwise is using it's influence to legislate against your economic best interests while selling you and those like you that it's your idea anyway as you'll all surely be rich too some day (while simultaneously doing everything they can in their power to prevent that minor economic shift from ever happening).

In short, politics in general are probaly something most of us should remain weary of, perhaps remaining uncommited to either varying ethos, your own side is the best side IMO.

No more tirades based on ideology or political alliances (self included).

Just wondering who's interested in the prospect of having a laugh while keeping an eye on our nation's civil discourse...

About the only large crowds I care to be around are at some good SEC football, basketball, and baseball games! I don't even mind if I'm not seeing my razorbacks.

I early voted to take care of my politics. No politician gives a crap about me and can give me a job or give me money. I have to go out and make it on my own. The ones who control/influence the politicians are the ones who donate to them or are their friends (I mean true friends).

I am working on some new marketing stuff and trying to go out and meet some folks between now and year end to get new business. I'm not from the Memphis area, so it has been challenging. Thankfully, facebook and the web are both good marketing tools.

Have a good trip to DC. The NRA's National Firearms Museum I believe is in Fairfax or Arlington, VA. The Smithsonian Museums are awesome from what i've heard. I've always wanted to go up that way and spend about a week.

Good for you.

I'm really hoping my work allows me to make it.

Think the thing that's important to remember, regardless of how one's politics lie, is that none of these fools are necasarilly looking out for the best interests of their constituents, and that most, if not all of them are full of s**t.

The Stewart/Colbert rally to me in many ways is merely a show of hands saying "this s**t is stupid, fix our country already", republicans are guilty of selling supposed moral high-ground while doing as much damage as possible under the guise of being "conservative", democrats, for their part, are guilty of being inept wussy's, trying to champion the common good as long as it gets them rich, arrogantly skipping human explanations concerning their actions when it comes to creating government entities if it doesn't fit a proactive-business-model when pressed fearing it'll leave them open to criticism as "socialist" or something, never standing their ground and sticking to their reasoning and defending it.

IMO the national discourse in our country is just a wreck right now, and if comedy and satire can help to open peoples eyes, so be it.

Unsubscribing from the thread, hope to see some TGOers there if I can make it, my personal feeling/belief is that TGO is somewhat taken over by kooks when it comes to politics and I generally try to stay above the fray, theist event looks to be a good time and seems to me to be really about a rejection of all the BS rhetoric we're always being inundated with constantly and hope it's a step to draw attention to ending it.

Please PM me if you're going...

Hmmm, my networth doesn't seem to be over a million. In fact it's probably under the value of some of you liberals cars, yet my belief structure is one that says, go to work, be embarrassed if you need a handout from the govt for any reason, that if the govt wasn't there with all these crap safety nets that most wouldn't need the handout, and that liberals are the ones that have destroyed discourse as you put it but removing all blocks to a civil and hard working society. You sir are the problem, and I was being nice and not violating the COC by once again not getting to the personal side of it but you do add to my fear factor by stating you have reproduced and are training them to accept what we see now in our govt as a good and positive thing. If you see ANY good from applying actual political discourse and comedy, and your not watching the Late Show or Letterman, then you have lost all perspective on how serious this really is! You have seen the posts here and other places. The nation is on the brink, we can't pay the bills, there are more and more folks voting themselves a living now, and one of the answers is to poke fun at it in a large group setting? LOL

Take feelings out of it and tell me how your political affiliation (mine is conservative and constitutionally based) is going to "fix" anything that is broke. Republicans won't get it done either but Dems, OMG, hell no. Offer your fix to get people off the dole, back to work, pay down the debt and protect those kids your raising from all the possibilities that are coming!

Ideology is partisan. It's the nature of the beast. This "Why can't we all get along mentality"

usually gets you further to the road to destruction. Cumbaya!

You can take Jon Stewart as you wish. I wish you well!

Civil discourse? From Jon Stewart? Are you serious?

Please. Stewart is a left-wing comedian. Watch when he appears on O'Reilly or vice versa. He isn't tired of the arguing and bickering, he's just tired of the fact that his heroes are wrong and everyone is waking up to the fact.

Civil discourse? From Jon Stewart? Are you serious?

Bingo. He's a D-bag of the highest order. Or maybe second highest behind Bill Maher. Just typing his stupid name infuriates me.

I'd like to see a celebrity deathmatch between Glenn Beck and Jon Stewart. Winner has to bone Rosie O'Donnell or Ann Coulter....audience choice by text message voting.
