I guess it depends on the crimp you want. My AR is the only one of my rifles that I crimp for but it is the only auto loading rifle that I have, I do use a cannelure with a heafty crimp for it.

For the most part I like no cannelure & no crimp. I shoot everything else single shot.

I just loaded a run of .303 British using 174 grain Hornady bullets. The cannelure was so far off when compared to Greek HXP .303 as to make me uncomfortable. That's just the latest example of why I don't like cannelured bullets. They limit your options on OAL too much. If I'm concerned about bullet setback in semi autos orhard kicking bolt guns, I just turn my expander ball down a few thousands, it only takes a few minutes and I don't have to worry about case length.

BLC2 on .223. I bought some of Midway's blemished .224 tips a while back. Looked at them and they looked fine. Now that I'm loading them I know what the blemish is. The cantelure, it varies wildy from slug to slug. Fortunately I wasn't planning on crimping anyway.

For varmint hunting is there a real need for crimping in an AR? I've worked up a really nice load and hate to change it now with a crimp.

Just make sure you have 3 thousand neck tension on the bullet and you will be fine.. don't need to crimp.. crimping is inconsistant due to the fact that your arm can not tell the difference in force enough to control crimp. You can control the necks easier.. as for powders.. well there is Reloader 15, Varget, H4895, VV 140, VV 540, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, Winchester 748.
