Whats with .45 GAP Ammo?

Today, I was in a local shop and they had a used Springfield XD LE .45 GAP for $340. I almost bought it, but I had never heard of GAP ammo until today. Does anybody have experience using this ammo and how hard is it to find? It sounded like a good price on the pistol, but not if the ammo is impossible to find.

Gap ammo is harder to find. I'm sure online you can still get some. It's slowly becoming a "dead ammo".

GAP is IMO a failed Glock experiment to make .45 ammo fit easier into their 22 frame. A couple other manufacturers jumped in to hedge their bets, but when it didn't take off, they backed down. If you buy the XD, you better buy up all the GAP brass you can find, and every GAP XD magazine you see, because neither will be very plentiful, or even availble, for long.

EDIT, huh, usually I'm no where near that opinionated, but I was a hair's breath away from getting sucked into the GAP movement. Backed out just in time.

Wasn't there a post on here awhile ago about a place that had them on sale for $275?

I've seen brand new Glock 45 Gap pistols for <$400 out the door from several dealers.

If you do buy a pistol in the caliber you need to buy everything you can find related to that caliber and plan on starting to reload soon. Guns might be cheap but ammo supplies will begin to dwindle and unless you reload it is going to get expensive. The round itself isn't a bad round but it didn't really fill a need that wasn't already filled by other calibers.

When the great ammo shortage was going on every store I went to had 45 GAP. It is not that hard to find. GA Arms still offers it in bulk. This was the same thing they were saying about the 10MM. Five State Patrols use this round as standard issue. The Glocks in .45 GAP have always been cheaper than the others to promote this round. This includes the LEO/Mil blue label Glocks. The are great shooting guns.

I've been wanting an XD for a while now, but I'm glad I didn't buy this one. I came home and went online to find out as much as I could, but all the internet info seems to be several years old (which is probably a good clue that GAP is a no show). I appreciate all the input guys.
