Yes, transubstantiation, it is a fundamental difference in belief between the Catholic Church and protestant religions. Taken from Jesus words in Matthew 26:26, also said several other times. It has been said, by biblical scholars, that many people left after Jesus said these words, "Take and eat. This is my body." And taking the chalice, he gave thanks. and he gave it to them, saying : "Drink from this, all of you. For this is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many as a remission of sins." Catholics take this as the truth. Many disciples left that day because they could not understand this. Typically when Jesus told a parable that shocked people, he would go further and explain the parable so that there is no misunderstanding, however, after he said this, he did no such thing. When the protestants split from the Catholic church, this is one of the beliefs from the early church that was not believed in. That is my basic understanding of that.

Anywho, I love Smarties and Sweettarts, I get my fill during Halloween. Oh, and 100grand candy bars. They are my favorite.

Hmmm...maybe transubstantiation is the word I was looking for. At any rate, I find the idea of eating human flesh and drinking human blood as part of a religious rite to be a lot more disturbing than a carved pumpkin (or a carved turnip, as the case may have been, originally.)

I'm not sure all Catholics really believe in the literal transformation, though. I was raised Southern Baptist (although I guess the closest thing that I could identify with, now, would be 'Deist') and, at least once I was old enough to look at such things rationally, thought of baptism as more a symbolic ritual than an event in which one's sins are, literally, washed away. Then, again, I have known more than one practicing Jew who really enjoyed a good pork chop or a bit of ham...

Very true, not all Catholics believe in Transubstantiation. I believe, I think this is the last number I saw, around 40% do not.

One of the largest Jewish population neighborhoods in Memphis is across Poplar from Corkey's!! A good strong wind out of the south takes that delicious smell over their neighborhood!

Funny Corky's trivia....jewish people own it. I think one of the partners of Central BBQ is as well. Stereotypes....they breaks them.

That is interesting. I was raised Catholic and it honestly has never entered my mind that some Catholics don't believe in that. What do they think they are receiving at communion?

And I always hated apples when trick or treating and always knew which houses gave regular sized candy bars

Hope I'm not misquoting the statistic, if you search, the percent is all over the place.

I don't understand how someone could be a practicing Catholic on not believe in it. Of course I had one priest tell me I could not be a good practicing Catholic if I married a divorced woman and then years later had another one tell me that it was no big deal and to come on back into the fold.
