10/22 Stock Refinish

My intention was to recreate the dark, black scars of the old war rifles. Thanks to VERO1 for the sweet stock. Hard as heck to take a picture of.

Dude, are you kidding me?!

That looks awesome! It has never crossed my mind to attempt such a thing. I love the looks of the old WWI / WWII war rifles. I adore my old Mosin Nagant, primarily because of the old foundry / arsenal markings, etc.

I would have never thought of doing this with a 10/22. But it makes perfect sense! Cheap to do as well. Would you post some of the details as to what all you did?

Again, I love that!

Stock came with some great embossed scars and scratches courtesy of VERO1.

Scuffed top coat

Applied dark wiping stain

Applied vinyl sealer tinted black (to highlight scars)

Sand off excess black sealer

Top Coat

This is more or less the method. Most of the credit goes to my genius of a brother who is a finishing wizard. It really should have gotten a dull top coat, but I didn't have any. I found a great article online somewhere for doing just this thing, but I went with the methods/tools available to me at the cabinet shop.

Hope you appreciate all the hard work my kids did distressing that stock. They played "army" with it for years. Those kids could wreck a bowling ball!

Looks cool!

... Hard as heck to take a picture of.

Lots of ambient light from multiple sources, mind the shadows. No flash, slow-ish shutter speed (tri-pod if necessary). Change the background from the white sheet to a darker color (blue, burgundy, green, ...).
