Ruger LCP Issue

My wife and I took our LCPs out to the range yesterday to break them in. Hers functioned flawlessly with 100 rounds. Mine had 3 annoying FTE / stovepipes on the last round of the magazine. We were both shooting mostly Privi Partizan FMJ, and also shot 7 rounds of Aguilla JHP. Mine was only FTEing on the PP.

Any thoughts? Pretty sure I wasn't limp wristing, and the fact it only did it on the last round makes me think it wasn't just cheap ammo. I was thinking about getting a new magazine spring and seeing if that fixes the issue.

As an aside, the LCP is a great little gun. Very accurate despite the small sights, and very manageable. My wife didn't have issues with the recoil (she despises my Glock 22 for that very reason).

I'm not sure about your problem but your wife's comments show that "percieved recoil" is just that, "percieved". I find my Glock 22 to be way easier to shoot than my LCP.

Did you try using the magazine from her LCP in your's to rule out any issues there?

+1 ... this is what i was going to suggest

Agreed. I shot about 100 rounds through the Glock after I was done with the Ruger, and I'd much rather be using the Glock.

Did you try using the magazine from her LCP in your's to determine if maybe it is your mag?

I'm going to try that when I go back to the range this weekend. I wanted to limit the variables this time out since we were breaking them in.

I would almost bet it's a mag issue. I've had exactly one malfunction out of my LCP and it was with the Fiocchi JHP ammo that was posted on several forums as being too long for the LCPs mags. Even with that stuff I ran a box of 50 with just one issue.

I don't think this is a mag issue since the problem is reported as a failure to eject/stovepipe. Many times this is caused by a bad extractor or broken ejector. Perhaps since it was happening on the last round is evidence that the rounds in a partially full mag help keep the empty casing from hanging up. Maybe the rim on the cheaper ammo is a little thick and the extractor isn't getting a good grip. Maybe it's got some crud behind it. I also suspect it may be a combination of the cheap ammo and a new gun that needs some more rounds fired through it to get it broken in. My advice is to clean and inspect the extractor/ejector, get a few different types of ammo and shoot them using your mag and see if the problem reproduces itself. Then try with your wife's mag.

I just bought an LCP and took it to the range over the weekend. I shot one magazine of Feberal Premium 90gr Hyrdrashock Low Recoil (6 rounds). The second round failed to feed and the slide was stuck open. I started the "tap-rack-bang" sequence and with just the tap the round fed. I proceeded to shoot the last 5 rounds without issues as well as 200 rounds of cheap Winchester FMJ from Wal-Mart. No other issues. I still need to try some different JHP's but at roughly a $1.20 a round the Federal's are expensive to shoot a lot.

Guys you need to run those guns a little bit to "break them in".... then swap mags and try a box of better ammo.... I think that will do the trick.

Ditto on the break in the pistol (which may mean breaking in the operator given the tiny grip on these things). I purchased my LCP about a month ago, and had 3 FTEs of my first 50+ rounds and then 1 FTE out of my second 50+ rounds on the range, with NO FTEs on my third 50+ rounds. This is using a variety of ammo. All of my FTEs were among my first few rounds fired, and while I'd like to blame it on the dang gun, I must admit that this could have easily been a grip strength issue on my part (I hate that "limp wrist" term!). When I started paying really close attention to securing the grip with my non-dominant hand, I didn't have a single FTE.

I still need a few more range trips to convince myself that with either break-in or improved technique, the pistol will work every time. If I can get to that level of assurance, then this will be one nice fine carry piece. Until then, my LCR is keeping my LCP company!

Thanks for the replies. I did take down both LCPs and the extractors on both my wife's and my gun looked the same. I'll put another 100 rounds or so down range (and try her magazine in my gun) before I make any changes / send the gun back to Ruger.
