Rimfire ammo

What brand do you think has the softest rim/primer/brass? I'm working a AMT Auto Mag II that is highly ammo sensitive (22 WMR). I'm getting very light strike ignitions as well as light strike no fires. I'd say 50/50. I've about fixed the light strike issue but thought I'd inquire with you guys on your opinion on the rimfire ammo. What do you think?

sounds like an equipment issue.

I shoot .22 mags with a revolver. Don't honestly think I have ever had a failure no matter what ammo I shot.

Ditto for me,a Taurus 991 with not a misfire so far,and am even using the Winchester el-cheapo ammo from Wally World.

Hey, Mike I'm being nosey. What kind of revolver? I got an old S&W k-22 Combat Masterpiece that's chambered for the 22mag, and it's a real treat to shoot. And with the 4" barrel, it's a real tackdriver. Unfortunately, I can't drive tacks with it. It's a much better shot than I am.

The Automag II is very sensitive to ammo and dirt. First clean very well then check parts for wear, replace any parts you have questions about.

Not know for reliability with a lot of ammo brands.

Hope you get it working right.

Tell me about it! I've been experimenting with all sorts of different ammo from different manufacturers. So far this thing doesn't enjoy CCI,Win el-cheapo Dyna points 45 gr., Remington's stuff. From what I have read there is a certain Win brand that this thing was sort of built around. I didn't write it down at the time and have not been able to channel my google-fu to locate it again. I've replaced the firing pin, FP spring. All other parts seem fine like hammer and hammer spring. To be honest I'm not seeing why this thing draws what it does on gunbroker, etc. I figured I'd try to find the softest ammo first by asking for your guys opinions. I'm leaning Rem at the moment. FP protrusion is suppose to be .028-.032 from what I can tell for rimfire. I'm sure different people have different opinions on this but this is what I was taught. The AMT automag II is not a winner to me. 22 WMR IMO has never worked successfully in a semi auto platform. They need to stay in a revolver like Mikes to me if you want to shoot it in a handgun.

I wondered about that. I have never seen a .22 mag semi auto. It seems to me that the skinny, long cartridge would be trouble as far as feeding.

I have read that Winchester's Dynapoint ammo is intended to be more like a slightly hotter WRF load using a full-length WMR casing than a true WMR load. It is a heavier bullet with a lower velocity that isn't designed to violently expand and is said to be good for taking small game without extensive meat destruction. The specs on Winchester's website show their WRF load having a muzzle velocity of 1300, the Dynapoint having a muzzle velocity of 1550 and their 'standard' load, the Super X (which is said to be pretty much the original load developed by Winchester when they created the Winchester Rimfire Magnum in the first place) is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,900. Of course, that wouldn't have much to do with how hard the primer needs to be struck but I wonder if the Dynapoint ammo has the 'oomph' to consistently operate the slide on your AMT.

FWIW, Kel Tec is recommending CCI Maxi-mags as the best, all around ammo in their new PMR-30 and KT also says that Winchester's Super X is a good load for it. That is, of course, for feeding, being able to function the slide, etc. I don't know where those would stack up for functioning with light strikes.

Yes the Dynapoint does not cycle the slide consistently at all. I'd say only 2 out of 10 cycle the action.
