DPMS AP4 .308....FDE Precision Carbine Build

Recommended Posts

Below are pics of my most recent project. I finally got a couple boxes from Aim Surplus and Getgear.us in the mail this week to finish her off. Been waiting on the brown truck all week...lol

The rifle started out as a new DPMS AP4 model LR-308. I have been trying some different .308 rifles for the past year and have gone back to the DPMS platform. The first one I had was a Tac-20 that I built. I thought I could find something better, however I realized over time that it was a great rifle and I wanted to go back to that platform.

The AP4 build was something that I've wanted to do for a while. I wanted to build a carbine .308 that could stretch out 400-500 yards if needed. I won't be shooting any further, if that far very often, so I decided the 16" barrel would be fine for what I needed.

The lower and upper were disassembled and coated in Coyote Tan Brownell's Aluma-hyde. This matches Magpul FDE near perfectly with only a slightly darker shade noticable in the sun. I also painted the scope, barrel, and the buffer tube. The Troy rail came all black, so I taped off the rails and painted the areas between the rails to continue with the FDE theme. The Aluma-hyde has worked well for me on several guns...as long as you bake and cure it properly it has proven to be very durable.

The rifle has the following parts...

Magpul ACS stock

Magpul MIAD grip

Magpul AFG forward grip

GG&G Bipod

Troy 13.8 MRF Free Floating Battlerail (uses a Troy barrel nut to mount too, doesn't touch anywhere else...kind of a neat setup and it's rock solid)

Troy low profile gas block

Sightmark 8.5-25x50 scope with sunshade

Scope mounted with a Burris P.E.P.R. mount (I run these on all my AR platform rifles...love em')

Primary Weapons Systems FSC-30 muzzle brake/ compensator (I run these comps on all my 5.56 rifles also...fantastic brakes)

I have a few things to add like an extended tactical charging handle latch and a sling attachment system for the sling I have for it.

First Tac 20 rifle in snakeskin camo: Somewhat similar build, but a heck of a big gun to tote around. Shot great though.

The sun shows some of the difference in shades of tan, but the camera makes it worse.

Great looking build. I love those GG&G bipods. Only thing you need now is a suppressor to make her a little more quiet.

I love them too. They are the only bipod I run now. I wish they weren't so expensive, but they are worth the money in my opinion. A suppressor would be nice...the PWS brakes are pretty loud. I have to apologize in advance to anyone shooting next to me at the range as the concussion of gas to the side of the barrel is pretty bad.

Ultra nice, I've been thinking about selling some 5.56's and getting one. I know I won't regret it but selling a couple of my AR's is tough. Great looking rifle you've built.
