General Contractor Licensing

An old friend of mine and I are seriously considering getting GC papers in order. We have too much home repair experience NOT to go forward with it if it will help. I believe law requires us to have one for the projects over $25,000 and a Home Improvement Lic. for things between 3 and 25K, which we haven't gotten into yet, but this MAY open additional avenues.

Does anyone here know how to get study materials on the cheap to prep, or do you have any near-up-to-date books you no longer need? Feel free to talk about other aspects of the trade, especially regarding costs to get it and costs to keep it.

tn.gov is your friend. Even better google tennessee board for licensing contractors. you can find anything you need to know as far as rules and regs, what books to study for the exam, etc., on the state's website. What's not on their site will be linked to another site. You have to hunt for what you're looking for sometimes but it's there somewhere.

I have all the books, but, I use them every once in a while and I'm not shipping them to Memphis...LOL

Find one of those "NO pass NO pay" courses and give them a call....They will give you a run down of the cost of the books and course. They will also have a bunch of other info. TAKE ONE OF THESE COURSES!!!

Don't get discouraged if you don't pass the test the first time, the lady that administered mine said that 70% of people fail the first time they take it. I squeaked by barely.

remodel is the ONLY aspect of construction going right now aside from select VERY fortunate areas. Im an electrician and there is no work anywhere, Im now doing fire and water damage restoration (ServPro).

If remodeling is what you want to do thats great but I wouldnt advise investing in a General Contractors license just to build houses, the market isnt quite ready for it yet in most areas.

As books of that sort, from airport, theres a used book-store off I-440, take White bridge Rd. exit, left, then right on Charlotte and it'll be on your right side across from a bank. Awesome prices but you never know what revision they will have of a book. Good luck.
