Please help support my Scout!

Guys, I know that most everyone is tapped out for cash now with the bad economy, but fundraiser season has started! I would greatly appreciate any help that you could provide in supporting my son's scout pack. The prices seem a little high, but 70% of the money raised goes back to the pack. As you all probably know, BSA is a great organization and is truely geared to guide these boys to be great men.

Thanks!

I am not so sure about that 70% claim.

My grandsons Pack started the popcorn thing a few weeks ago. Everyone is supposed to sell 180 bucks worth of the stuff. But they also offered a "buy out" option for 50 bucks. I took that deal.

I pretty much refuse to try to push my problems off on people I am related to or work with. I would have found a way to buy the $180 worth of the stuff myself before peddling popcorn.

Good luck with meeting your goal.

Scouting is worth the time and effort and there is a lot of that involved for Akela.

Trail's End popcorn is some of the best popcorn available. The cheese popcorn is one of my weaknesses.

The fundraising program is intended to teach the scout the importance and satisfaction of self-reliance by paying his own way.

Parents should be involved in the process, but should not do it for them.

Alrighty! I love Trail's End popcorn.

To clarify a few things.

70% of the funds go back to the COUNCIL. How that council divys up the money is up to them but a lot of it will go to local camps and council wide events.

Mike, if the boys troop/pack set those limits and a "buy out" option, that was definitely that group and not the council. The BSA doesn't create quotas like that and I personally think that's garbage. I would either refuse (they can't kick you out), complain to the Council or find a new troop/pack.

Heck they did me a favor with the 50 buck buy out. I was ready to buy a load of the stuff to do my part.

And in case I caused confusion there was never at any time any threat to sell or there would be repercussions.

The only beef I have with scouts so far is with one of the Troop leaders. The guy is a little too self important. When they did the popcorn kickoff we met in the church itself. I was wearing a hat like always. The troop leader actually had the nerve to tell me to show respect and take off my hat "you are in a church ,show respect take off your hat". These words out of his mouth as they pitched their popcorn right from the altar. I found it kind of humorous actually. Wanted to make mention of Jesus and the money changers but I just let it go.

Sorry to get OT.

Everyone buy some Cub Scout popcorn, it is for a good cause!

Mike,

Scouting is no different when it comes to people who are self-important asshats, and I ran into my share of them in the 10 years we were involved. But I didn't let them get to me. They had no authority over me and I didn't give them a second thought. There were too many great people who by far made up for the few jerks that I encountered.

We met in a church and hats were part of the uniform. If this jerk tells you again to remove your hat, ask him to show you where in the book it says you can't wear a hat in the meeting place. He's not there to administer church rules. I'd just tell him to go take a flying leap.

I don't let them get to me. The boy really likes going and participating in it all, makes it all worthwhile for me.

I think the quota over sales amounts is to earn prizes. All the kids who participate are going to go to Grays TN to the fossil pit one Saturday.

Well, Mike, if you go to the fossil site in Gray and don't swing by the house to say hi to Sue, you're gonna be in deep you-know-what :wall:

Bring along some .22 and do some shooting!

Not sure how that will work out, especially if the trip is made in a school bus like they are talking. Thats gonna be one long bus ride too.

When you coming home for a break?

Mike, one other word of advice. DO NOT give your email address to the council, district, or national council, because you will never get it off!! Create a new account and just use it for that if you need to be on an email list.

I have been trying for two years to get my name removed and I am still getting emails.

the only one who has my email is the den leader, he emails me and keeps me up on dates of Den meetings.

No one else has ever asked.
