Hello all, My brother married a liberal girl a few years ago and has no guns in his house. He received the same safety and responsibility training that i got as a kid but he never really caught the bug like i did. But he is a business owner and is doing pretty well for himself and is (finally) concerned about home safety. Before were start the 9mm vs 45 vs 12ga i need to help him secure a pistol. My 4year old niece is in the house and weapon security is the priority.

What do you think about a MVB500Micro vault biometric ? Biometric Gun Safes | GunVault

They look pretty cool to me.

I'd appreciate any help. Together we can create a new responsible gun owner.

I don't fully get all that biometric stuff. Seems dandy, but to me that just seems like something that would not want to work when you needed it to most.

I have this one, it works well. Cabela's: Stack-On Mini-Storage Vault

But more importantly, I also have read this....

Amazon.com: Gun-Proof Your Children / Massad Ayoob's Handgun Primer (9780936279053): Massad F. Ayoob: Books

and this ... Cornered Cat - Table of Contents

Have your friend, and particularly his wife, read them both.

edit... here's a fairly extensive listing of available safes: http://www.gunsafes.com/Pistol-and-Handgun-Safes.html?sort=priceasc&catid=36

For one or two pistol easy access bedroom gun safe, I am partial to the mechanical no-batteries push-button safes. Bolted down out of the way but easily accessible.

V-Line Top Draw

Nothing is perfect security, but they are made tough and work a long time in my experience.

I have a non biometric safe with the finger buttons from the same company and it is great. It provides fast access with multiple user programmable 3 or 4 digit combinations. It has an alarm if there are I think 3 consecutive failed combinations. You do have to make sure to keep fresh batteries in them but I change mine once a year to be sure but they still are functioning and I use it daily.

Mine is an older version of the following link but looks the same. I actually got it on clearance at Wally World several years ago for about $40.00 I wish I had bought a couple more for my vehicles.

I have several GunVault's stashed around the house. They work great for me. I have had them for many years. Batteries last a really long time. There is a key for access if batteries fail.

However, if I were buying all over again, I would definitely look into the manual push button lock safes. Those never need batteries.

Thanks for all the help. I have no kids and i married a country girl so i never thought about this stuff. The "cornered cat" piece sounded a lot like the instruction i received as a young boy.

As for the safes i don't like relying on electronics but that decision will be up to my brother and his wife. I hope to turn my niece in to a shooter some day if i don't have kids myself. If all goes well i'll let you all know what he gets and how it works.

Thanks again,
