1911 Hollow point nose dive ??? (Ammo, Ramp, Mag, Mag release)

Ok, so I have this American Classic 1911 commander. When I insert a mag, there is about 1/8th of an inch play (the same as my RIA commander). With Fiocchi JHP's, the first round nose dives if I don't hold the mag tight in the magwell in when I chamber a round with the slide release. All follow up shots cycle perfect, or operating the action by pulling back the slide.

This happens with all 3 types of mags that I have tried (Factory, Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick.

It only happens with 1 of the 3 types of ammo that I have, Fiocchi JHP, and not with Ball ammo or Golden Sabre's.

So, do I

a) take a dremel to the feed ramp (my favorite option)

replace mag release

c) Send back for warranty repair with 8 rounds of fiocchi ammo

d) Don't use fiocchi ammo and pay the extra 6 bucks for Hornady xtp's

e) Run 300 more rounds through it and hope it gets better.

What I wouldn't do is take a dremel tool to anything unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Have you tried pulling and releasing the slide instead of using the slide release? This may be an option.

Yes, that works ALMOST everytime.

my opinion = polish the feed ramp. start by hand sanding with 1000 grit sand paper, than 2000 grit. finish up with a dremmel and polishing compound

whether my firearm needed it or not, I polish them all have yet to see any ill effect from polishing the feedramp!

How many rounds have gone thru it to date? Break in period (500-800 rds) should be confined to ball, IMO. I'd be leaning towards option D, maybe B also.

Are these 7 or 8 round mags? Is the mag that came with it different than the others in round count? If they are 8 round mags have you tried loading just seven rounds in them and then seeing if they do this?

I think at this point you should run the gun wet and stick to hard ball ammo and break it in good. I would certainly stay away from the ammo it doesn't like. You can always try again with that ammo once the gun has several hundred rounds through it.

7 Rounds in an 8 round mag works perfectly.. WTH is up with that. I owe you a box of 9mm ammo

In the interest of edumacation, what is the root cause of kesava's feeding problem (symptom), which is cured by leaving one round out of the mag? Is there a permanent way to solve the underlying problem?

Warbird hit it! Sounds like the best thing to do, before you play around with it! Polish that feedramp and you may void your warranty!
