Onboard vehicle tracking without a warrant

It's the gradual creeping in the door of a bad law that you don't understand.

What law? The owner called On-Star and told them to shut her vehicle off. You think a law is required to be able to do that?

It may have been used for good one time, but its ability to be used for evil by a tyrannical government, in a time of emergency(like when they don't like what you may be considering doing because they have taken all perceived rights away), you might change your mind. But that's just the boogey man speaking.

What do you see yourself doing in an emergency that the government is going to need to track you or shut your vehicle off? Can you give us a scenario?

The Patriot Act is another example of a bad law with maybe good intentions. It was still a bad mistake.

What would you have done?

Franklin and Jefferson could never have imagined the loss to this country (both in lives and in our economy) from a dirty bomb (or even possibly nuclear detonation) attack on New Your City (or Nashville). So don’t start quoting them.

If Onstar is so good, why hasn't it been unversally adopted? I hope it never gets that far.

It has been. On-Star is owned by GM; that coupled with patents is probably why it isn’t available on other vehicles. Ford and one of the ricers (Toyota I think) were supposed to have a version of it this year.

I feel lucky. Lucky that when I see a piece of technology that is saving lives or helping people (like On-Star) my first thoughts aren’t how are the cops going to track me or shut my car off. On-Star is a private product that is owned by GM. In these thoughts that go through your head; how are the cops going to gain the ability to control On-Star and start tracking you?

You have a cell phone? Most everyone does today. If you do you need to remove the battery and throw your phone away. Because you can be tracked by your cell phone. Sometimes the CIA has even put a smaller battery in your phone you don’t know about. That way they can still track you if you remove the main battery.

Go back and read 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Soyulent Green to get an idea or two, and watch "Minority Report" and get back to me.

You could have gotten a bit deeper with Franklin and Jefferson.

Instead of the Patriot Act, I would have kept any law that was constitutional and not done the Act.

Reorganizing our security and making it share information didn't have to gut the Bill of Rights. That

act did.

Onstar is great as long as the government doesn't get any control over it. You think I don't know

what's in a cellphone? I won't rely on it if things got to the point of outright tyranny.

Ford has a system. They aren't owned by the government, though. GM is.

I can't sit very comfortable with the government having the ability to disable my car in any case.

It's none of their business what I do with my car. Maybe I'm not as trusting as you are, DaveTN.

Do you really trust your government that much? I don't.
