It will depend entirely on what you want to spend. Places to spend money are the barrel, the trigger, and the optics. Places to save money are everything else.

The lower is a place you CAN save but be careful there too! If you get to far down the quality chain you'll have a lower that won't match up to your good upper and that will mess the whole deal up! (DO NOT BUY OLYMPIC ARMS lowers, my opinion but after owning two, I'm convinced). Put a quality trigger kit in it. I use Rock River Arms single or two stage National Matches.

Getting an upper is the same. Tolerances are what is going to make it a plinker or a tack driver. Chrome lined barrel will make it last longer at the sacrifice of a little accuracy. Stainless is what the varmint shooters use. Unless you want to throw down some big cash on a custom (White Oaks Armament, etc) get a stainless from RRA or Bushmaster. I have no experience with the Bushy, but my RRA chrome lined AR is great and at a good price. My other ARs were custom so you don't want to hear what I dropped for a .458 or a .204 Ruger. If you were serious about the varmint portion of your statement go here and order:

Then spend some good money on quality optics. YMMV

To me what makes a good target/varmint hunter makes a terrible zombie rifle. If you're building a target/varmint rifle go cheap, if you're going to depend on it in a fight I would get one of the top tier rifles.

LMT, CMT/Stag, BM, RRA - as long as you get it chrome lined bore and chamber.

Colt is good, but not good enough to justify the price.

My ideal zombie rifle:

Agreed! Zombie rifle chews on any ammo you have available (Wolf) and puts max rounds down range with good accuracy.

Varmint rifle is one shot one kill MOA accurate and should use only quality factory ammo or precision reloads!

Top rifle, My .204 Ruger! NON ZOMBIE rifle!

Middle, 6.8 SPC with Kotonics upper (sold to Joe at Hero Gear)

Bottom, Zombie special, RRA UTE with EOTech.

I have an "Oly" lower... no problems. But mine was bought a long time

ago. About... '97 so things could have changed.

I'm hoping to get a couple of lowers to put up for my boys. Maybe one for

my wife as well.

Look at Essential Arms for stripped lowers. I just got one from Rabbi and had done some prelim work in hopes of using them for a group buy on another forum last year. Quality appears to be close to RRA or Sabre that I already have!.

With the statements from several of you that you want lowers, maybe one of the vendors will want to step in and do another group buy! Frank at ETS did one for Sabre lowers and even had a TN logo engraved on them! Rabbi might want to as well with Essential since he has dealt with them before.

How about it vendors! Group buy time again!?

I would be up for 3 at $80-$85 plus tax and $10 support the TWRA fee.

Just in case somebody is looking for a reason to do a group buy. I would be more than happy to do cash on the front end to a reputable dealer who might be thinking of doing a group buy.

I've been wanting to get into one also, but don't know enough to make a practical decision on one. A zombie gun sounds like what I'm after, eat what ever you feed it, reasonably accurate, something that can take some abuse. What should I look for, do they work well for lefties, can you get a lefty?

Stag (CMT) makes a left handed model AR. Stag makes great rifles overall, fully zombie rated. Specifically regarding the left handed model, I've only known one person with one and He loved his. How many parts they have that are proprietary to the left hand model I don't know.

Not bad, now do it blindfolded in the dark with gloves on! Kidding

Did you launch the front pivot pin spring at least once trying to hold it compressed and getting the pin in or are you the one in a thousand that it just slid right in for?? My first one I launched twice, loosing it the 2nd (had the spring kit just in case I did it so no issues). I now put a blanket over me and said lower while pushing springs in!

I launch it only once. It bounced of selling, and I heard a noise of hitting a shoe box/gun tolls box.

Got up, looked inside , and there it was little pivot pin:)
