First LEO encounter while carrying Mississippi

My thoughts on the scenario are this: IMHO if you are A) in a must notify state or B)make it your personal practice to notify regardless, it should be done in a slightly different manner than how the OP handled it.

Get pulled over. Roll window down, and put hands on the wheel at 10 and 2. Wait until the officer address you. Do not remove your hands from the wheel. If/when he asks for your license, do not hand him your license or HCP. Before you even move, politely inform him that you are a carry permit holder and that you are in fact armed. Allow him to direct you at that point. Most officers that I've encountered get jittery that you've already dug into your pocket, center console what have you before telling him there's a weapon in the car.

I got pulled over a few months ago for an expired tag (idiot mistake on my part). It was in the morning and I was headed to the gym (already in gym clothes). At the time my weapon was in the glove box, my gym bag right underneath it.

He came up, said good morning and told me why he pulled me over and asked to see my license, reg and proof of insurance. Before I moved, I said my license is in my gym bag is that ok? He said sure, then I said, by the way, I have a carry permit and I do have a weapon in the car. He asked where it was, I told him, he said no problem, just don't reach for it to which my reply was a smile and said no, of course not.

He never asked to see it or my HCP.

So, in my opinion, merely handing an officer your HCP is not proper "notification."

Food for thought.

Pretty much the way I was told.

Not that I ever put my handgun in the glovebox, but this is one reason I know keep my registration and insurance card above my sunvisor instead of in the glovebox....less range of motion to get to them.

I agree....and in TN no biggie, but in Must Notify states may want to verbalize that you are armed......after saying you have a permit of course. :)
