Firefighters let man's home burn down over $75 fee.

Yes, Shelby does. It is fee-based apparently and not governenment funded...

Shelby County Portal

Ours isn't voluntary though or cheap. I get it tacked onto my electric bill and it runs about 28 bucks a month.

That rant from the Chief that Crimson posted is wrong on the trash account like you said, I pay 62 bucks a Quarter for county trash pickup.

In reading everything this seems more like backwards ass county and city policies that led to this. And for all you naysayers even the Chief in Union City said he would have put it out once they came to the scene for the neighbor.

I have always said that I am not worried about the military or cops going around collecting guns because they would not do it; it is wrong. Maybe I am wrong.

Oh yeah. You're wrong. New Orleans in the wake of Katrina when the POS police chief sent his men around confiscating guns illegally.

You're also the single most arrogant person I've encountered on the entire Internet. You must have been a real joy with a badge.

This.

Does anyone really know what the policies are? I've heard bull**** from the Chief that it would be illegal for them to fight the fire?!

Even in Obion Co, TN people are so worried about covering their own asses, common decency no longer has any relevancy. It is impossible to do the right thing for threat of litigation or loss of livlihood. Sad, sad state of affairs.

If that's what happening the boondocks (that's the podunks for my ET people) of Tennessee, America, then we are already screwed.

Just out of curiousity, what is the record for the longest thread with the most posts in the shortest time period?

This one ain't even close yet

But I think it's run it's course. Clearly two sides and neither will be convinced. The future and how our economy effects public policy will provide us with "winners" on the debate here. Whether anyone will care who is vindicated at that point is my concern.

I again call for the question.

(that's parliamentary procedure to end a debate for those scratching their heads, needs a second though)

Like one poster mentioned that he thought they should have put it out just because of the Clean Air Act. Like people have said, TN is under a burn warning/ban so if there's all these trees and brush around how was it even responsible of them to just let it continue burning? I assume they controlled the perimeter, but I guess I just don't get how they couldn't have just said "Yea it was out of control. We HAD to put it out...to ya know, stop a forest fire."

What county in this state has a fire department?

I know Henderson and Madison have county Fire Departments. I believe Gibson does as well. While Decatur doesn't have a "county" department there are 8 volunteer FDs spread out in the county the provide protection. Instead of a fee they charge if they respond.

Not to go full circle, but son of lord of the trailer started the fire...by firing up the burn barrrel...next to the mobile home.

Yea I did know that. As I said from my first post, Mr. Cranick is not without fault in this.

F-ing GD WAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I don't believe it for a sec. The dude prob refused to pay their 1000.00 per hour per truck fee and is bitching cause he could have joined for 75.00. I had a tiny 3' diameter fire in my back yard on a no burn day(yes i had a permit but i did not call to check) and a neighbor called in on me. Rural metro came, i put the fire out myself and glad handed with them and they assured me there would be no charge. 2 weeks later i got a bill for 2000.00 bucks. needles to say we joined for a tiny fraction of the cost. Do you think the fire trucks, firehouses, fire hoses, emt setups, etc, etc, etc are FREE!!!!! IF your do not live in the city THERE are NO GOVT. SUBSIDISED FIRE SERVICES. If you are not willing to pay a few bucks a month for insurance then STF UP!! OR else start your own fire crew and go put peoples house fires out for FUN..... AND DO IT FOR FREE!!!!!

Based on such comments about the “right hand of God†and how no one ever rips on them it’s sounding like you have some deeper and not so supportive feelings about firefighters in general that go far beyond this incident.

Good grief… thanks Dr. Phil. smilielol5.gif

As to telling them how you feel…I’m just suggesting that since you’ve spent so much time in this thread bashing this FD you ought to consider redirecting your efforts to the folks who you are actually mad at and maybe encourage them to change to something you find more acceptable...you can complain on this or any other forum all day long but it isn’t going to change a thing.

I’m not bashing Firemen; quite the opposite. I know a lot of Firemen and I know not a single one that would stand by and let a house burn over $75. I am bashing what these specific guys did on this specific call. I’m not mad or complaining about anything I’m just taking part in a very active thread. You need to calm down… take deeps breaths. :)

What's interesting to me is that some here wonder why the FD let the man's house burn over $75 but make no mention of the fact that he didn't think his home was worth a measly $75/year. Until he needed help, that is.

Years ago, I was sitting at a place called the "Branding Iron" drive in, in Springfield, TN

eating one of their fantastic cheeseburgers. I heard commotion from others and looked

back towards the hill where the hospital was(now the jail) and saw a trailer catch fire

and burn. It took maybe ten minutes to burn completely to the ground. It took the Springfield

Fire Department longer than that to get there and they are not very far away.

I can only guess that this structure in west TN was very much gone by the time any FD

would have gotten there and wouldn't have made a dime's worth of difference. This

whole story and several of our opinions of this might consider the fact that if a fire

starts in your house, there won't be much left of it. I doubt Clarksville's FD would do

much better on my house because of the type of construction. I'm sure they would try,

though.

It all hinges on what you expect out of your government as to what your cost would

be for your security from house fires or crime. You already know that the police can

only do so much, after the crime has been committed. Apply that to a fireman's job

before you berate fire protection in any community.

Jamie said something that has happened to me once or twice about driving back to the

house worried over whether you left a cigarette burning or the stove on. Human nature.

Being proactive is the only way to prevent this problem and if the people of that area

decide to change their method of fire protection, they will. Otherwise, they are satisfied

with what they have and do exactly what they need to to protect their own families and

property.

Big Brother ain't going to fix this, but they will cost. Be careful what you wish for.

I probably get more right than Dr. Phill does; I've just never had Oprah behind me to make me famous. Maybe I'm wrong but I think my assessment is at least a base hit even if it's not a home run.

:) Wow...you even quoted me and still got it wrong! As I said

Oh is that what you call what you've been doing in your posts.

By the way, I'm still waiting for you to explain where you heard that the guys in this FD wants to “...argue what they did was right†as you accused them of several posts ago - as far as I know, and I've read a lot about this story, no one else has claimed they ever did that.
