The load I wanted to use to start reloading with used Solo 1000 powder, precision bullets, and federal primers. Well Midsouth is out of Solo 1000, so does anyone have a comparable load they already use? The precision bullets seem to be pretty cost effective, I'm using a G19 so guess I'll try the 125 gr. This is my first try. If anyone has any other good loads with other cheaper bullets please share the info.

You can check the various powder manufacturers websites to find load data. Here is a burn rate chart to give you an idea of powders that have a similar burn rate to Solo 1000-

Burn Rate

Here are links to the manufacturers data-

FWIW, Accurate doesn't list any loads for Solo 1000 in 9mm on their website.

4.2g VV N320

Zero 125 JHP

CCI SPP

Range pickup brass

Loaded out to 1.145"

Works very well in 7 different 9MM's I have, ranging from 3" to 5" barrels.

The precision bullets you're talking about are the coated lead bullets, right? If so, and if they're loaded like the 124gr Berrys plated bullets, I've had success with the following loads:

4.5gr Universal Clays

6.0gr 800x

4.8gr Unique

All performed satisfactorily for me loaded with 124gr Berrys plated bullets to a 1.14" OAL, with various brass and primers.

Does a cast bullet want different powder than lets say a FMJ ?

I just bought my first box's of cast bullets (9MM and 40SW)and I am wondering if I should

consider them to want something different from what I have been using w my FMJs......

I was thinking of trying Bullseye and I also have some Unique but I really was looking for something cleaner

When it comes to reloading POWDER is the single one entity that offer so many variations I get a headache !

I've worked up loads with all sorts of powders for lead and FMJ bullets. So far, all I have noticed is that dirty powders are always dirty and cleaner powders are usually cleaner. Doesn't seem to matter what type of bullet. Just remember that the two bullet styles aren't loaded the same. The lead load is going to use less powder. For example, with my 124gr lead bullets, I'll use 4.8gr of Unique, versus 5.5gr of Unique for the 124gr FMJ's.

Oh, and be careful with the lead bullets and stock Glock (polygonal rifled) barrels. According to some, the lead buildup can cause a kaboom. I've personally never seen it, but I decided to err on the side of caution and bought a LoneWolf barrel for shooting my lead loads out of my G19. Google "glock lead bullets" and see the various reports for yourself if you're curious. To me, a barrel that was less than $100 seemed like good insurance.

I loaded up a few to try out today....I cant figure out why a cast bullet that weighs 124g would want less powder than a FMJ that weighs 124g....curious but I have heard that before

Hi Sonny

Maybe there are other reasons, but I think mainly that high velocity with lead, leaves more lead melted into the barrel.

When I first started shooting, bought 500 or 1000 commercially-manufactured flat nose lead reloads in .357 that were hot as a firecracker. As hot as any jacketed commercial practice load. Maybe in addition it was fairly soft lead. Was too dumb back then to know.

Those hot lead rounds would leave literal rivers of lead in the barrel. It was a super PITA to clean.

I have 5.4g of unique in some 180g cast bullets I want to try this afternoon ,also some 7.0g of Longshot in a dozen loads as well,I think the longshot will be too hot

Not much data around on cast 40s,I may just toss them aside

Im worried about Lead poisoning :)

Lead has much more resistance in the barrel than a jacketed bullet so it increases pressures. Also if you push lead too fast it will melt the bullet and lead up your barrel like crazy, also bringing with it some serious pressure issues if it leads up too much.

+1 to Lester & Mike's comments.

You're right, there's not a ton of info on cast .40 loads (not something I realized since I don't reload .40). The Lee manual shows 5.2gr to 5.5gr of Unique for 180gr cast .40 bullets. It's been my experience that Lee's recipes are usually fairly conservative, so 5.4gr should be a safe starting point. I've never tried to chrono and push lead loads for the reasons that others have pointed out. I usually use them just for punching holes in paper and will stick with the lightest load that consistantly performs well (cycles the action & doesn't feel "weak").
