Get her whatever gun she wants and has picked out herself. You really don't get much of a say at all in this one. To think and act otherwise is to needlessly spend money only to take the hit when you sell it to get the one she really wants.

Trust me, I know.

THIS.

That thing dont look very safe Bro, You best just send it to me so I can make sure for ya;) I will even pay shipping to help ya out. Anything for a Brother ya know:)

I was also going to mention the Walther GGP, but you said she wanted heavy and the PPS is a pretty light gun, although a very good one IMO.

I know I dont need to tell you but letting them have what they want makes ones life much easier.:dirty::love::)

Yea I know , There is nothing that beats cometary, Bro :P

If you have to have a 1911, others have given you options. If she will go other routes, and just wants a .40 Short & Weak, look at SIG, specifically the 239. I'd also suggest a Glock, probably the G23.

Guns and Leather had a used CZ-75 for around $400 earlier in the week that someone must've really appreciated, had an SA trigger that would shock most 1911-purists, just awesome, and the DA was as good or better than the best revolvers I've felt (actually convinced me to finally pick up an SP-01). They also had good prices on a couple P-01's too I believe, which might be better for carry do to their size and the decocker.

Recently I've become quite the CZ believer, it's pretty amazing how good you can make 'em without too much effort, my SP-01 breaks like a glass-rod in SA at around 3lbs with zero creep, and DA is smooth as butter at about 6-7lbs, all DIY based off of info posted on czforum.com.

Sure, they're 9mm's, not .40's like the tough guys all like so much, but light-years better than any Taurus, you do want her to stay your girlfriend right...

After shooting my friend's CZ-75B Omega, I wish I had saved up for a CZ-85( ambi-version) I like my P95, but the CZ is definitely in a different class. As a full size, it may not work. Great feeling grip for a hi-cap mag.

RIA also makes a 1911 in 9mm

+1, 2 and 3 on letting her pick out HER gun!

STI Trojan 5.0 comes in .40 S&W, I've seen lightly used ones go for less than a grand on gunbroker. You could also look into the Para-Ordinance line of .40 1911's. Unfortunately, the real market for a .40 1911 is for high capacity race guns that have supplemented the .38 super as an IPSC caliber. Your other option might be to find a 10mm 1911 (colt, kimber, para, and several others all make them) and then have it converted to .40 since the only thing you'll have to swap out will be barrel and springs since the case head is the same.

If she comes around to 9mm, your options in 1911's open up, since you could even go for a .38 super (that provides 9mm +p+ levels of power).

best advice I've read here yet, get her a 1911 in .38 super, its not a 9mm and its not a 45. And best yet, its not .40
