What can you tell me about this? I ran across it along with a Glennfield model 50 bolt action 12 gauge today for what i think was a good price and just don't know much about older firearms but would like to find out more about it. What I think I know is that it is an 8mm Mauser. The markings show M24/47. Got a couple of boxes of ammo with it and noticed the back side of the bullet seems to be wider then the end of the barrel. I never noticed this on any other firearms i owned. I probably won't shoot it much but would like to try it out. I would also like to do some research on it to see if I can track the serial number back to anything specific. I don't think its anything special but one I didn't have before. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That's a Yugoslavian 8mm Mauser. They have a good reputation for quality and accuracy. It uses regular old 8mm Mauser ammo (7.9mm, 7.92x57mm are other names).

The box of ammo you show is Yugoslavian M75 8mm Mauser ammo made in 1983. A lot of this ammo has been sold lately as 'sniper' ammo. Reports are that it is very high quality ammo and pretty accurate. I'm not sure that running it through your M24/47 will give a worthwhile test. You might want to get some of the cheaper surplus 8mm for plinking or normal shooting.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the back side of the bullet seems to be wider then the end of the barrel". The bullet should be slightly larger in diameter than the bore. If you take a cartridge and stick the bullet into the muzzle end of the barrel, it should not go in all the way to the mouth of the cartridge case. You should have about 1/4" of copper bullet visible unless the barrel is pretty worn.

Thanks, That's exactly what I've got. It just didn't seem right to me that it was bigger than the bore. I'd never really thought about it. I just wanted to make sure it was safe to shoot before i went out testing it.

Does the bolt number match the one on the barrel? Is it armory stamped or eletropenciled? This is important. If the bolt and barrel numbers are a stamped match, most will say go shoot it without checking headspacing with a gunsmith. If it is mismatched or electropenciled, really do go get the headspacing gauged by a gunsmith. (Basically, to be safe, have a trusted gunsmith look it over anyway.)

This should be a good shooter, and fine hunter.

The Stock and the barrel match. I don't think the bolt matches though, its hard to see cause its almost rubbed off. I wandered about the number its marked with as well. All of them i could find online had four digit number and this one has only 3. Theres a gun smith close to my work. I think i will have it checked out just for peace of mind before i go shooting it anyway.

Now I'm just confused. I took it to the gunsmith and he said it was in great condition and should be a great shooter. Great, so i went to J Floyd s today to see what ammo they might have for it. I found all kinds of 8 mm Mauser for real cheap but I had 2 people tell me the M24 47 doesn't use the 8mm Mauser ammo that it has to be the 7.92x57 because the 7.92x57 is .318 diameter and a lighter load and the 8mm is .323 diameter and a heaver load. However I've watched these things being shot on youtube and they seem to be firing just the 8mm Mauser Ammo. Can some one please unconfuse me.

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Go buy surplus 7.92x57mm or commercial 8mm Mauser ammo, whatever your preference is, and have fun shooting.

If you are really concerned buy some Yugo surplus ammo....http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/600-rds-196-gr-8-mm-mauser-fmj-ammo-with-stripper-clips.aspx?a=520193. Made by Yugoslavians for Yugoslavian guns.

Just be aware that all surplus ammo is corrosive. Clean accordingly after use.

Thanks, I went ahead and bought some of the surplus stuff earlier today. I thought it was a bunch of crap but didn't want any accidents.
