NBC Shows

So I've tried getting into the new show The Event but can't seem to. The main reason is that I cannot hear anything other than music and sound effects, no matter how high I crank the volume. I tried out the show Chuck tonight and the same thing, mumbling for dialogue, music/sound effects loud and clear.

No other channels have this problem, only NBC. Has anyone else noticed this?

Nope, watching it right now, DVR, and can here the dialogue just fine. Chuck rules except the "checking if loaded by pulling the slide back" routine that they do when they get ready to go.

I had that same problem! I had recorded the show on my DVR and when I tried to watch it I couldnt hear...like you said everything else drowned out the dialogue. I eventually quit watching it. I thought it was my DVR, but now that I think about it, Ive experienced the same on a couple other shows that werent recorded...

Damn right. I have been preaching this (to annoyed friends) for years - ABC, CBS, and NBC write/produce/show complete garbage. How anyone can watch this stuff is beyond me.

(this is in response to MustangDave's post - I'm not sure why it didn't carry the quote after I clicked the button to quote it)

Hi BoltAction

Are you using speakers built-in to the TV, or a stereo system, or 4+1, 5+1 (speakers Left/Right front, Center, Left/Right back, subwoofer), or something else?

I'm ignorant of modern TV sound, since I don't watch much except news, and hardly ever watch movies. So this is just a guess at the general problem if some people have this problem and others don't.

If the show is encoded for multiple speakers, and you are listening on simple stereo or whatever, they may have messed up the encode on that show so it is not properly stereo or mono compatible. Alternately, not all receiver decoders are built equal, so it is possible there is something in the show that your receiver makes decode errors when playing back.

A third possibility, you could go into the sound preferences on your TV or Cable Box, to see if any "sound enhancement" options have been turned on. Cable Boxes, TV's, higher-end receivers, can have user-adjustable settings that are supposed to make the audio sound 'better', and sometimes those settings are not compatible with all sound sources. I'm a caveman who only recently discovered fire, so I always set mine for no enhancement, simple stereo. I still listen with only two speakers, though it is almost impossible to buy a simple stereo receiver anymore.

Though the exact cause of the issue might take some investigation, and might not be anything you can fix, it sounds like some kind of phasing error. For instance if you have simple stereo speakers placed pretty close together, and wire the speakers out of phase, the voice and anything else that is about equal volume on both channels will cancel out. You would hear stereo music and stereo sound effects (things that have different volume in Left vs Right speakers), but the out-of-phase mono signal (voice) cancels between the two speakers.

I'm not claiming that your problem is a simple wiring error. It is just the easiest way to demonstrate the phenomenon. It is very easy to mix stereo or multi-channel audio which misbehaves in mono. So something screwy in the way the show was mastered or encoded could give you phasing problems just as a side-effect of 'normal operation'.

I have trouble with Sunday Night Football's sound. I use a reciever to decode the Dolby Digital sound and all I can hear is the fans yelling. The commentators are barely audible. I have to fiddle with the sound settings and select something that disables Dolby, and use something like Pro-Logic instead. Other shows and channels are usually fine.

It must be the way they broadcast it and my older tv. I started watching episode 1 on my newer tv with comcast on demand and everything was fine. I may try gettign the surround sound hooked up right to my main tv and see what that does. I'm like most of you with the big 3, nothing great or that entertaining anymore. Guess I'll just stick to FX, History, and Discovery.

Who ever shows the show Outsourced should be ashamed of themselves. I may be the only one here but I find it in bad taste.

Yes sir - I made a post about that on that Book site...

I don't believe that many Americans, in all honesty, want to watch some comedic S--tcom about jobs that are outsourced to India, in this economy... Stupidity.

It seems like almost all the stuff on ALL the NETWORKS including some cable channels is repackaged stuff from the BBC or some other NON AMERICAN TV tripe...there is no ORIGINAL TV programming out there.
