Made a Career Change

I have been in retail management for 2 years and to make a long story short, the retail life was not for me. The inconsistency of hours got in the way of the things that I truly value such as church, wife, family and friends and that even means more to me than a paycheck. I am called to be head of the household and provide for my family, which I will, but left a job with limitless opportunities and was as stable as the morning sun.

My new job will be in Staffing. I will have a job finding people jobs. I think this will really play even more to my strengths in dealing with people, and I see it as pretty stable as there is no shortage of quality people out there. BTW is anyone here in Staffing or use a Staffing company to hire people?

I really felt physically ill to leave my current job because I knew exactly what I would be giving up. But, given a set of decisions, I am going to make the best one and I know this was the right decision. I have ZERO malice towards my current employer and they are letting me finish my 2 weeks which they normally don't do. I can honestly say I am a better man for having worked for them. They have invested a lot in me to be who I am today.

I am young, have a business degree from an SEC college, and have an extremely supportive wife and family. I figured also that it would be best for me to try this out now before I get stuck in retail.

I have gone "all in". Wish me luck!

A couple of cool notes: I turned in my 2 weeks notice on my wife's birthday and it was also the same day my M&P 15-22 MOE rifle came in, both not planned.

I know all about the odd hours. I work nights and am on call 24/7. It gets old quick.

Best of luck to you!

Congrats on getting out!!!! I have been in retail/retail management for 10 years now and I am so fed up and sick of it I could puke. If I had any skills other than using great merchandising to convince people to buy crap they don't need, I'd join you in leaving this soul sucking hell of an existence behind. I wish you great success in your endeavors outside the retail slog.

I work in retail and I so understand exactly what you are dealing with and would love to get out of it but I am still looking around and want to find something to get onto first before leaving the retail job.

Good luck!

I was where you are a few years ago. I had been a utility sales person and while I didn't paticularly like it and I knew it wasn't what I wanted for a career it paid well. It paid so well that when the company got in trouble I was able to use my saving to finish school.

Fast forward to graduation. I couldn't find technical/engineering work but got offered several sales jobs by manufactures that would pay well.

Long story short I held out, took a low paying design job and waited till I had someting on my resume. Eventuallly it was the right decsion since I now have a job that I actually don't mind getting up and going to and that I can consider a career.

My only regret is that I was mid life before I got there.

Good Luck. It's scary but it does work out.
