I've got a random question, but does anyone here know where I can find the laws regarding having a fire pit or outdoor fireplace within Nashville city limits?

You can search the Metro ordinances here: Municode - Search

If they're anything like Memphis, a fire contained in a pit is ok, AFAIK. My wife wanted a fire pit and I searched for hours and couldn't find anything prohibiting it in Memphis.

I'm building one this weekend. I live in a residential area, but I'm in the county and our ordinance permits it. Like others have said I think a fire pit is fine. Not much difference than a grill if you really think about it.

I think as long as its in a fire pit your good to go. Don't think you can if you live in an apartment though.

Yea, they frown on building fires in apartments. Go figure. ;)

You can also check with one of the local Fire Departments, is what I did. It was quick and easy, dudes where very cool. Just don't catch em while they are running out the door or at meal time!

I'm not in Davidson (but in Williamson, Franklin to be exact), and have a firepit that I built... typical circular deal with heavy stone, and a gravel/stone bottom to keep anything from spreading unintentionally. As far as ordinances, etc. - if it's a decent pit, bought, or built, you shouldn't have a problem. I burn stuff all of the time (cardboard, etc. and some other silly things) that could possibly be a problem, but no one has ever complained (no, I don't burn tires... :) )

I lived in franklin a few years ago. Fire dept recommended keeping some marshmallows by the fire pit. Apparently, cooking of meals precludes HOA and local ordinance issues.
