Rimfire Scope

Recommended Posts

I picked up one of my guns from my youth this weekend.

It is a Mossberg 640T, a bolt action .22WMR. I am looking for some cheap optics for it, something to have fun with. Punching holes in paper. I don't need anything long range, I do most of my target shooting at CCA.

I have a rimfire scope I took off of my wife's Nylon 66, however, I find that it obstructs the bolt handle on the Mossberg, making it unable to cycle. The receiver has the grooves cut in it for a weaver mount, but I am at a loss here.

Should I source some new rings, or is this just a lost cause forcing me to use irons?

Simmons has a scope that interests me, but as mentioned above, I am at a loss for rings. Has anyone encountered this before?

The grooves in a .22 receiver are not for Weaver rings, but for 3/8" or "tip off" rings.

Many scopes designated for rimfire use come with the tip off rings included.

If there are also 3 or 4 threaded bolt holes in the top of the receiver, those are for adding a Weaver rail, for Weaver mounts, although you can also get tip off bases that will go there.

I don't know that particular rifle, but yes, if your current scope mounts are touching the bolt handle or something, then you'll need to get taller or differently shaped tip off rings, or add a Weaver adapter to the slotted receiver mount or something. Some pics would probably clear up things for some better advice.

I picked up a set of leupold scope mounts to fit a 1" tube to 3/8" mount. They are pretty tall, designed as see thru for your iron sights. Plenty of clearance for bolt handle. I think I paid 13 bucks for them at Bill's Outpost in Maryville. I'm not using them at the moment if you'd like to try them out for a while.

I appreciate the offer. However I think I am gonna order the whole kit and kaboodle from Ables, they seem to have the best price on that particular scope. They offer a high rise set-up for around $10.
